RPG Maker

I've just spent the last ~5 days messing around with RPG Maker VX, it's a pretty good engine for creating Final Fantasy type games.

It's comes with a good set of graphics/music/animations which you can put into place with a simple UI. You can also get into scripting events and even altering the base code.

You get 30 days free then you have to pay $80 I heard it's easily hackable though.

Has anyone around here got any experience with it?
Here is a screen shot of the game I'm working on, I'll try and upload it somewhere tomorrow.

Ok here is the game I've been working on. This is the tutorial level, the only thing that isn't finished is the final boss which should eventually take multiple hits to take down.

Please let me know what you guys think
The next bit to add is the crafting system which will need a lot of heavy coding, so I don't want to waste my time if I'm shit at game design.

It's an interesting concept having the specific defenses set like that. However, a combat system that amounts to something more than just walking through bad guys would probably be a lot more entertaining. I don't know if you were just messing around with certain aspects of the system or not though, so maybe you didn't intend to have a fleshed-out combat system. Also, what was the deal with the boss? When I bumped into him, it was just straight-up game over. Did I die or win or..?

Also, with your current combat system, how would multiple hits work? Walking back and forth through a monster seems kind of weird. Or will it work out differently?

Aside from those issues, it was pretty nice. I don't know how much work actually goes into doing what you did, but the world and such looked good.

You win after you touch the last boss.

As for the combat system... hhmm.. it is too... restricting... you either win or you don't with no chance to save yourself.. I see this getting very annoying as you go through the whole game.

The land it's self looks good as do you mechanics, don't know if you designed all your systems yourself but if you did nice work. I would change combat though.. you idea sounds good on paper but in practice it is going to get old and tedious quickly.

Over all a great first game for sure.

Haha the combat was the only system I designed myself. Thanks for the feedback though, this is just what I need. It's great that you all helped.

If you got Game Over on the last boss, then you died
He is an Orc so you need to switch any Strength selections off or he will one shot you I think, it is a bit harsh tbh.

Basically I wanted to do my own version of My Brute or a Rougelike and this is the best engine I could find. I think the combat is just like Zelda atm without having to manually press the sword button, it's pretty much like that because the engine doesn't have any options for this kind of combat.

My main focus was the sandboxish crafting system which is where the fun will be
I see that the combat needs overhauling first though.

What I'll do is experiment with every enemy needing multiple hits to die (you wont walk back and forth though the monster), and add some anti game over features like automatic potions on death or resetting to the start of the room.

What does buying a RPG maker license give you access to? are there large differences between versions VX and XP?

After so long you can no longer use RPG maker if you don't buy a license.. you also can't distribute the product, well legally anyway.
