| 2d Game Engine Anyone got any suggestions? I have tried both Game editor and Game Maker and I don't like their interfaces... any one used another that was good? I want to make a FF2 sorta game... basic sprites and graphics but with a great story. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

| So far all I have found that is even remotely decent is RPG Maker XP. Easy to work with and decent but the community that supports it is just like the sphere community where you have thousands of dumb asses who don't know shit and just a few people who do know what they are doing and those people don't share anything with anyone unless they get their asses kissed and worshiped like a god... so I am trying to learn all the ends and outs on my own. Here is the download of it.. has a free month trial to see if it is what you want. RPG Maker XP There is a new version of it, RPG Maker VX, but from what I have read it is not as good as this one. Haven't tried it yet.

| I like Unity but it is also a 3D engine. They do give you a tutorial for a 2D side scroller game which is actually a 3D game but the camera is used to give it the feel of a 2D side scroller. Development can only be done on the Mac but they just recently announced version 2.5 which will be for the PC also. |

| yeah I have tried that before.. it is way too advanced for what i want. I don't want any 3d graphics or anything like that. All I want is to make an overhead RPG like FF2. I am still playing with RPG XP but it doesn't seem to be able to do all I want it to do... or maybe I am just not using it in the right way. It seems very limited in it's ability at story telling which is my main focus.

+24 Internets | RM2003 might fit what you need better than RMXP does. It has side-view battle system, overworld map where you can designate "areas" of a map for random encounters, has vehicles, faceset graphics, more dialogue options than RMXP has - I think it even plays AVI's. It's not as pretty as RMXP/VX and has no scripting support - but it's better than most of the others to make a SNES type of FF. Only part that's kinda difficult would be setting up certain special commands like "Jump" or something... still possible though. Last edited by Laladilya; 01-29-2009 at 10:08 PM.. |

+5 Internets | EA LA just released "Angel" a 2D game prototyping engine. You can check it out and it's documentation here: angel-engine - Google Code This may be a little to technical for what you are looking for though |

| Just a little up date... I am using the RPG Maker VX and so far it is the best 2d engine I have found. I love the ease of use but it is so versatile that I can do all I want and still haven't reached the the max of this program. I highly recommend it.

+24 Internets | VX is what I'm using also. The mapping system is pretty crippled from earlier versions which is my primary gripe with it. Overall though, it's the least "clunky" feeling one so far I think. If it had a side-view battle system and rmxp's mapping system I think it'd be perfect. You can always bypass those limits with scripts, but it's always harder since you can't modify the editor GUI at all :/ Same company is making Action Game Maker now... not much info released on it yet, but I guess it will be able to export to Flash and even XNA as well as the typical standalone. More for Zelda or sidescroller games than jRPG's though. |
