Well I only ever saw one that did it anyway when Warcraft 3 was at it's most popular.

yeah wintermaul wars. if you have a serious interest in playing tower defence i don't why you wouldn't go out and get warcraft 3. definitely your best option.

Can any artists give me some feedback on whether 15x15 pixel is large enough to provide decent looking graphics of anything that might be in the game, from the towers to the ships to soldiers?

Seems like it would be too small, but going up to something like 30x30 means I may need to reduce the whole map size which I'm not sure I want to do either.

atm, working on a map size of 30x48 tiles.

It is small, but just depends on whether you want them to be very detailed or not.

I think small is actually better if you aren't a very good artist. Doesn't have to be detailed at all, and still looks somewhat decent.

uh what? most popular? has it become unpopular?

anyway, if you want to do some TD research, just fire up frozen throne and hit custom game. Any game that isn't Dota will probably be a tower D game.

I think it was...line tower wars? where everyone gets a section of parallel land to set up a tower maze, and then you build units to send to your opponent. You have lives as well, but the main mechanic was that the better your maze was, the more units you killed, meaning you'd make more gold and could send more units to your opponent, overwhelming them. Though there's a balance between how much you can spend on your towers without gimping yourself. There's two forms of income, killing creeps and producing monsters.

I think you can figure out the rest from a design perspective.

15x15 is REALLY small. People dont play games at 640x480 anymore. My team recentely put together a small tower defense game in Torque with a tile size of 20x20 and the two artists bitched the whole time. Was really hard to get any level of detail.

I created the Flash version of the Warcraft 3 Gem Tower Defense, Gem Tower Defense. I basically taught myself Actionscript 3.0 and I enjoy making, even made a little money off of it.

Actionscript 3.0 is very powerful, I'd suggest playing around with it and see if you like it.

zSHARE - harbor defense b.swf


Size seems to be too large though, so may need to trim that a little. Decided to no try tile based for the time being, though everything still has to be consistent. Obviously I have close to zero artistic talent as well 8(

Good start, you've got down the basics of a TD game. You've got some interesting targeting system going on with the ability to miss.

I was just starting to mess around with alittle bit of flash about a week ago. Since the zShare isn't up, I couldnt see what the OP did.

Here's something that's probably too basic/simple for the OP, but for anyone else reading that may have a slight interest but no experence in Flash TD games:
