Just an interesting thought the dev team

Instead of trying to design your own mmorpg from the ground up, which can be an insanely lengthy and difficult project, why not make your own custom version of EQ with an emulator like these guys have done.

Shards of Dalaya

Main Page - SoDWiki

Just found out about it the other day and its done by a team of about 7 people. They've completely reworked stats and how atk and ac work and everything. They designed their own encounters and such and completely redesigned the game, not just some old version of EQ with some changes.

Think of Counter Strike which is really just a mod of Half Life and ended up being even more popular. If CS did it then why can't the same be done for EQ? This would also be a good way to test out certain gameplay ideas and you have a whole world already made for you(which is probably one of the hardest things about making an mmorpg), all you need to do is populate it no different then when Brad did it and with enough work and solid unique ideas you could make it better then he did! Can make the changes you always thought shoulda went in the game too~

Anyways just thought it seemed like a good idea and that it might be something a little more doable than trying to construct one literally from the ground up.

The emu doesn't really allow you to change things on the level of Half Life -> Countstrike. You can only put up your own server and change the placement of mobs, stats, etc.

Or am I wrong?

Not really sure to be honest, I just saw how nice of a job they did with it and how they changed the game pretty drastically and figured it'd be doable.

I haven't played on it but I know a guy who does. New zones, new mobs, new items I think the max raid is 12 people.

If we did this I'd want the EQ dev tools to design & create new zones though...

Ah, I haven't played on it in years.

When I did it was just the old zones (although they renamed them) with new items and mob placement, etc. But overall not really a new game.

If they have the ability to actually design new zones, that's pretty awesome.

yea same here Grave but from the looks of it, with all this new technology and things becoming alot easier they've been able to do alot more. Just go buy EQ Titanium for 9.99$ at best buy(it says its 19.99 but itll ring up as 9.99) and give it a try.

I've got a ton of ideas for an eq emu server that I think would attract thousands. An EQ PvP server done right(and theres a super high demand for one since the only pvp server on live blows because of how broke EQ has become)!

Yea adding new zones would be insanely cool like adding a Brell Serellis(sp?) zone dedicated to underground tunnels and would be near Kaladim~ There always shoulda been a Brell zone imo, I mean the guy has a hat with candles!

If it was made PvP, you would get a lot of attention and players. A lot.

yea you're not kidding, trust me I know, especially if you knew the insanely awesome ideas I have that I think would make not only EQ itself better but EQ PvP about 100x better which is why I even brought this up in the first place. It would be a good vs evil server, two teams only just as it should be and the world starting locations will be strategically divided up and you can be any race/class combination on either team but must decide whether you are good or evil at character creation(free will is always best, right?). And I've got a ton of good ideas for pvp class balancing with new and altered class abilities and a completely revamped pvp resist system.

my only problem is I have no idea about programming or anything like that but I do build computers so it's not like I'm completely computer retarded. I've got the ideas, just need a team of people to put it into binary~

SoD is fun, I have a 30 druid and war on there. It would be a good idea to consider doing this also, it seems like it would have alot of potential to grab alot of people into playing, obviously on this board alone theres a big demand in playing EQ again, and it wouldnt hurt if it was more custom like SoD is too. a private progression style server would be the shit also because you can control what goes on.

I spent the past 2 1/2 years(actually maybe it's 3 1/2...time flies) creating content on SoD, so I know firsthand the limitations that the server faces.

Your hands are pretty much tied by the client - you can't do *anything* that would involve modifying core files. You also can't change things like starting stats, race/class combinations, stat/attribute caps(except FT/hp regen), etc.

That said, it's amazing what all has been done on the server, looking back at its roots.

Also, a bit of an aside, but I wouldn't really look at SoD and say "it's easier to do it this way" - the server has been around for 5 years now and the entire server codebase has been rewritten from its EQEmu counterpart.

Nice, I've been curious because I've been thinking of creating a custom PvP server with a great deal of the game being modified but mostly just altering loot and loot tables and perhaps adding some of my own encounters/quests and if possible my own trade skill items/recipes

Got tons of ideas actually and want to make a server that is 10x better than live PvP was
