Haha the wizard pipe!~

Could make it a secondary held item, kinda like the Stein of Mogguk in EQ if it doesn't work actually in the mouth. Now that I think about it; it's kinda weird original EQ (and a few expansions really) didn't really have very many unique looking items seeing how fast you guys are modeling stuff.

Started texturing, I don't have much experience in this area, but it is turning out fun so far!

Probably a ton of limitations, I remember a lot of the early weapon graphics had hardly any "real" 3d in them at all. On a related note, it's funny, I saw a new EQ screenshot recently, totally pimped out graphics, but one hilarious throwback to the old days:

Also Blog that axe looks awesome. I love the grit on it.

Nice job on the 3d and texturing! I may try my hand at a few maces later on today.. I worked out a couple basic concepts last night, but I need to reference them though and make sure they are realistic enough and possible to do as well as make a few further adjustments.

here's a couple more helmet designs.
I'm still brainstorming on other helmet designs, and put off the weapon designs for a few more days.

Anyone have any direction for the wizard/helmet designs? suggestions?

I didn't do this, but while searching for some inspiration and research for war hammers, I thought this was too awesome to pass up.

Also, do you guys do this stuff w/ age ole pen and paper or do you do it using Photoshop/Illustrator?

Oooh trixxy. I couldn't figure that one out for a minute or two. I assume that's a new character?

About their lack of content, I imagine that has more to do with the tools (or lack thereof) to get items into the game than any effort of manpower on creation. I could be wrong about that, but modelling, UVing and texturing haven't really changed in the past 10 years, although they've become a little streamlined in various apps, as well as a wealth of information available for our learning pleasure.

Some good looking stuff, guys. It's difficult to put detail and finesse into a lowpoly object, but you're doing a great job with the room you're given. What size texture maps are you using for each weapon?

iirc, it was because of the infamous global asset file. A lot of the art assets had to be in a single file that was always in memory in case any character / monster (even though most mobs were zone related I think I remember them saying they were also in the global file) showed up in order to avoid constant loading. Dunno if you remember most machine specs back in 1999 but I am pretty certain that average memory was ridiculously low (don't want to throw random numbers but I could see it being less that 128MB or something along those lines).
That's one of the limitation they mentionned most of the time when explaining that stuff.

512x512 maps with no bump / spec, bad alpha support, and only jpg/tga/png formats =P

Call me gay, but I've always considered wizard/caster "helmets" as misnomered, which is to say they'd be nothing resembling a helmet and more along the lines of a headband, circlet, crown(?) and so forth. That's not to say they can't have an actual martial-appearing helmet, but my personal feeling is that seeing one dressed up like Ye Olde Tank(tm) kind of detracts from the idea that they can attack the darkness with ze magic missiles.

I'm trying to find the one I really like, but having difficulties right now~

Think there's a pic of a pointy wizard hat on the wiki that I saw. Seem to recall a caption about "I put on my robe and wizard hat"

Also could do a hood maybe, made a quick example since I didn't get a chance to do much today. May even work for a druid.

Ya know what I always thought was cool for casters? In that cartoon Gargoyles, the Archmage guy had a metal plate that covered his head. What about something like that but with runes on it? You could have them in varied colors too if ya wanted.

Here's a pic of what I mean:
