Leveling progression

Just an idea I've had for awhile for an MMO, would be neat to get feedback here.

Basically, once you have attained whatever (Current) maximum level is in the game, then leveling speed on other characters on same account increases. For example, if the max level is 50, and you have 1 character level 50, then leveling up your other characters will be say 5% faster (ie a 5% bonus to everything xp). If you have say 4 characters level 50, and start a 5th, then you would have a 20% bonus to everything xp).

Once level cap was raised, the bonuses go away until said characters were at max level.

It would make it easier to grind once you've done it already, and make alts/bots more viable.

I was thinking:

0 Characters max level - 0% bonus
1 Characters max level - 5% bonus
2 Characters max level - 10% bonus
3 Characters max level - 15% bonus
4 Characters max level - 20% bonus
5 Characters max level - 30% bonus
6 Characters max level - 40% bonus
7 Characters max level - 50% bonus

Pretty good idea, in my opinion.

Although I think it should cap off at 10-15%. 50% is a little extreme.

50% max sounds fine imo, it does sounds like a great way for people to roll up alts and keep lower lvl content/community alive.

Yea, once you hit 7 characters, I wouldn't want to spend forever leveling it up...

It promotes replayability and retention, especially if it doubled with a skill system some how, allows for more freedom of play style, much like Guild Wars offers.

One thing that might be an issue, and I don't even know if it would be, is the fact that as the game gets older newer players often times level up with peoples alts. If the alts are gaining exp faster than the new players, this then causes newer guys to fall behind and they can't keep up with new friends who are playing alts.

The counter argument here is that people levelling up alts generally already have friends and level up with them, so they often times never join PUGs and stuff.

Thats just my thoughts. I think it sounds really good, and I would have liked this on all my alts in WOW... thats for sure, lol.

insert the all important function of turning of xp gain if you want.

Never understood why more games didn't have an XP toggle...

Or have some sort of AA system where they can be gained at lower levels

Well, if you don't want your alts to level faster than your newbie friend's alts why not put a maximum xp bonus cap on the lowest common percentage? So if you have 3 max-level characters and are grouping with folks with only 1 max-level characters you only get the 5% bonus while grouped instead of the typical 15% bonus. In this way it lets folks seeking to just grind to max level as fast as possible gain the full xp bonus, but those afflicted with altitis won't inadvertently out-level their buddies while grouped.

Or just keep the lvl based xp in. With say Lvl 10 can't kill a lvl 5 or lower and get xp. Then code it in so that the friends "New" char will get full xp (50 / 50 normally then it changes as the lvl differance increases). Since like you said they're lvl'ing with friends alts. It will let the new person stay within xp range of the old school friend's alt.

I need more coffee >_<

*EDIT* Course you would also have to add a lvl differance cap. So far apart and neither would get xp. To prevent out of control plvl'ing

Why not just make it to where once you hit the amount of Exp. needed to actually level, you have to go to a trainer or hit a button to level up, ala every Black Isle D&D type game. That way you could hang around at lvl 10, for example, and help your lvl 5 friends catch up without having to worry about leveling further ahead. Just a thought.

That is the same as turning off exp.

What about maybe a mentoring system, or scaling the bonus down / sharing it with party members?
