What James said. I've lived in Houston then Austin then back to Houston. I love love LOVE Austin but I'm not sure if I want to leave Houston to live there again. I've really enjoyed my time in Houston the last few years and with my lease expiring in a few months, I'm debating whether or not I want to move back to Austin or stay here. I do remember having to constantly walk by homeless on my way home from a gas station or jack n the box though, I haven't missed that at all. At least the Houston beggars tend to stick to redlights (where not rolling your window down is all that's required).

The cost of living is a bit more in Austin (if you want to live away from govt housing), but being able to commute easier is nice. I don't mean from a Metro (bus here) standpoint, but my truck was fucking up, I bought a new bike and I haven't looked back about 7 weeks ago. There are the few times I will need a truck and I'll get it fixed for that, but biking isn't very friendly in Houston, especially with how spread out the city is.

I'd probably be looking for a place near barton springs. Have a friend who lives on Dawson, pays a little more than I'd like considering how small his place is but I think his landlord knows he's too lazy to move so will gradually increase his rent.
