I'll be moving to Hempstead Long Island in about a month. Going there for school and dont know anything about the area really. Anyone have some info? How easy is it to get into NYC? Is there stuff to do on long island? Thanks for any help.

Lived my entire life on Long Island, right near Hempstead. Very, very easy to get into Manhattan; the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) will have you into Penn Station in about 40-45 minutes. What is there to do on Long Island? Much the same things there are to do in suburbia anywhere. Lots of bars and random parties and whatever if that's your thing. Tons of great restaurants. I live in Long Beach, so I have to give a nod to LI's beaches (though don't expect Hawaii or Caribbean quality). Towns are generally very self-segregated. Lots of annoying as shit rich girls. Be glad to field more specific questions as you ask them. What school are you going to -- Hofstra?

Yeah, Hofstra. Gonna be working on my graduate degree. Is brooklyn easy to get to? I think alot of stuff I want to do will end up being there. I know theres a bunch of free shows at the East river state park this summer with alot of my fav bands. How much does it cost to take the LIRR into the city? Any specefic italian restaurant you'd recommend? Do you know of a good record store?

I've lived on the Island my entire life. Suffolk, not Nassau though.

I'm not sure where you're coming from (North Virginia?), as that will greatly influence your perception of this place, but these are some of the more important points to know when living here:

1) You'll find almost everything to be much more expensive. As in two, three, four or possibly five times what you're used to paying -- most notably at bars and the gas pump.

2) Extreme vanity is rampant.

3) The girls are hot as hell. May have something to do with #2.

4) Despite the borderline terrifying behavior habits of many of the people who you'll meet here, there are some who are actually cool and won't make you loathe the human race. Seek them out and befriend them immediately.

5) Nassau = urban/suburban sprawl. Suffolk = suburban sprawl/farmland. Both = awesome fucking beaches.

6) Splish Splash

7) Know your roads. Traffic is ubiquitous, but there's a bunch of parallel-running highways you can use to escape nasty delays that require only a 5-10 minute detour to access.

Hofstra is a good school. I've been to some insane parties around there. Its also prime location from the city. You're probably looking at about 7-9 bucks a ticket for the train -- don't quote me on that. But the real problems start when you hit the city, where you can easily burn a massive hole in your pocket if you're not smart with the $$.

You'll realize quickly that the Island is a strange place to live. There's a sort of hive mindset at work here at an intensity level I've never experienced anywhere else. Some people thrive off it and others it eats up. My biggest recommendation to you would be to not let people get you down. There's a lot of folks here who cling to that ultra-cliquey ultra-competitive high school douchebaggery and turn it into some truly cruel shit. Just laugh at those people.

And eat the food. All of it. Goddamn we make some good food here.

Brooklyn's ultra-accessible, closer (obv) than Manhattan. An easy car or train ride. You're probably paying about $12-18 for a round-trip train ticket into Penn Station, depending on peak or non-peak, etc. Can't help you out with a good record store, sorry. Italian food, man -- it's hard to turn around and not bump into an unbelievable Italian place. I'm sure you can easily find a 'best of Long Island food' list with a quick Google search, but from my own stomping ground (Long Beach) I can insist upon you going to Gino's Pizzeria, so, SO fucking good and I miss it intensely being in China. The Grandma's, Sicilian, and ESPECIALLY Crostino Slices are must-eats. Nagahama is the best Sushi in Long Beach, also extremely delicious. Hard to beat Jimmy Hays' for steaks. Pancho's Cantina does great Mexican. Best breakfast place in the area, and maybe one of the best in the state, is Thomas' Ham and Eggery very close to Hofstra. Holy fuckshit that place is good. All the above advice is on point. Enjoy your stay man, and like the guy says, don't let some of the assholes get you down. There are a ton of cool people to be found.
