I've finally sold my house at last, so I'm flying to Japan beginning of November.

I'll be staying near Asakusa for 5 days when I arrive then moving on, so if anyone has any recommendations for good places to stay then I'd love to hear them!

I stayed right near Asakusa, just one or two subway stops away, in a hotel/hostel called Oak Hotel. It was pretty nice, we had two single beds, a TV (but you only got like 5 Japanese channels for free), and a tiny personal bathroom with shower. I'm not sure exactly but I believe the final cost was 80 USD per night.

Probably going to start sounding like a Sakura House shill...

There's a Sakura House Hostel in Asakusa, right by Sensoji Temple. I never actually stayed there, I just used their lobby facilities, don't know what their living quarters are like. The place was relatively new though. Wasn't grungy or anything. It's right next to a tiny amusement park too. Uhhh..hanayishiki? It was quaint.\

edit: just noticed the post date. Guess i'm too late.

I'll be going to Japan in April! Visiting Kobe, Kagoshima, Yokohama and Hokodate in a cruise ship. I also plan to be there an extra week, that I have a chance to hand pick wherever I want to go

I will have to re-read this thread to get some ideas!

Might want to go a couple weeks early, if the whole cherry blossom thing floats your boat. Pretty sure it'll be done by early April.

Nah it's all good. I've been here just over a week now in a hostel in Asakusa, it's a cool place and they've got their own bar so I've got all I need. I'm still kinda finding my feet though being new to travelling alone.

I'm getting a bit sick of the whole hostel life truth be told so I've booked myself into a hotel in Akihabara for a week. The plan basically being to be able to sleep without interuption, have my own space and piss a week away in the area of Tokyo that is my own personal heaven.

After that I might well come back to Asakusa a couple of weeks as it's a nice quiet retreat after a night out.
