| Well, after using an elliptical I would never go back to a treadmill. I can feel a big difference from just jogging on a treadmill. The elliptical makes you do most of the work. Plus it puts less stress on your joints. |

And a ergometer (rower) is indeed a great way to work out. The thing is though, that without a good instruction you will hurt your back/knees/joints, well just about everything. So get a few classes at the local gym before taking on a full body workout.

| I found the best machine was the Schwinn Airdyne. Low impact cardio bike that works your arms and legs at the same time. Its fan also cools you down while working out. Only drawback is its loud =/ Even tho running is the best, this is very close and you don't have to injure yourself for life to be healthy. ![]() Amazon sometimes sells them at around 450 with no tax and free shipping. Its quite the bargain for a machine that will last you a very long time well over 10 years with no maintenance. Last edited by column : 04-01-2008 at 10:50 AM. |

Unless you're running at 250+ lbs your knees can handle a lifetime of running. Just buy some decent shoes and don't run exclusively on the street.

| The pounding your feet and joints take while running is astounding. People wouldn't ever mention or look for other ways to do healthy exercise if running wasn't an issue for a very large number of them. Healthy and athletic people in the proper weight range have problems with running. From feet issues to knee and hips....it can be extremely bad for a large number of people. |

+25 Internets | I own an Elliptical and it's a very, very good cardio work out. I don't use it much these days, as I do most of my cardio at the gym, but when I wasn't going to my gym, I used it 5 days a week. I have a fucked up ankle and can't do normal or treadmill running for long stretches. And even if I could run well, it's hot as fuck here in the summer. ![]() |

Do you realize how much pressure and gravitational force is weighing down on your body when you run? You can alleviate a ton of the pressure by wearing proper shoes, but you're bound to run into some trouble along the line. Good idea to eat nutritious if you plan on doing it, too. =P edit: Some problems that can occur: Tendonitis in the feet and knee. Shin splints (even though it's a type of tendonitis), and some form of hip syndrome. Popping of the head of the femur.
