[EPL]Harry Redknapp Arrested

ESPNsoccernet - England - Harry Redknapp arrested in bungs probe

Word is that it's something along the lines of another corruption scandal. The details aren't all there yet, but Pompey's chief executive and one agent also arrested (among others).

I'd say this puts a damper on his hopes of being the manager of England.

Well this has come as a complete surprise to every football fan in England . In fact, earlier in the day when the BBC released the ages of the men arrested but not their names, Harry Redknapp was the first name I typed into Wikipedia to find out his age.

The other people arrested are Peter Storrie (Portsmouth CEO), Milan Mandaric (Leicester City and former Portsmouth owner), Willie McKay (agent and another surprise to see his name in the list ) and Amdy Faye (Charlton player on loan to 'Gers).

It's to do with taking "bungs" or bribes for signing players - something along the lines of the agent saying "give player X a £1m signing on fee and you'll get £400k of it back for yourself" during transfer negotiations. This is an endemic problem to English football, the last scandal resulted in then Arsenal manager George Graham losing his job and being suspended for 1 year after being found guilty of receiving bungs. Even the legendary Brian Clough was implicated in that scandal though no charges were ever brought.

A BBC documentary earlier this year implicated Harry Redknapp in a new bung scandal, for instance revealing that Redknapp now owns a racehorse that was given to him by Willie McKay, the agent. Redknapp has refused to speak to the BBC ever since, sending out his assistant to do post match interviews etc
