As an assistant coach in Chicago for three seasons, Wade Wilson was always working out in the Bears' weight room and was a "body freak," who looked as fit as he was in his playing days, according to one team source.

But the source said yesterday that he was "shocked" by a Daily News report yesterday that Wilson, 48, admitted to NFL officials that he received human growth hormone and anabolic steroids while he was a coach with the Bears, a job he held from 2004-06. Wilson, now the Cowboys' quarterbacks coach, was suspended five games and fined $100,000 by the NFL yesterday for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. He will be reinstated Oct.9.

"You couldn't have caught me more out of left field," the source said. "This is totally shocking news to us given our relationship with Wade when he was here."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the suspensions of Wilson and Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, and Dr. Richard Rydze's departure from the Steelers, are a direct result of the investigation into a widespread Internet drug distribution by the Albany County District Attorney's office. There have been nine guilty pleas so far in the probe.

Doctors, hired by "anti-aging" clinics, signed prescriptions for patients they never saw, and those prescriptions were filled at Signature Pharmacy in Orlando and other pharmacies. Albany and Florida law enforcement agents raided the pharmacy and several clinics in February.

"The district attorney's office in Albany has given us three names," Aiello said yesterday. "All three have been addressed. The Steelers doctor - the team separated with him. Now these two. We followed up, investigated them and addressed all three."

In a statement yesterday, the NFL said, "Coach Wilson has acknowledged purchasing and using such prohibited substances. The evidence supports his statements to our office that he did so for personal use only, did not distribute any prohibited substances to other people, and has ceased using these substances."

Harrison was suspended Friday for the first four games of the regular season - including next week's opener against the Jets - after admitting he, too, received illegal performance-enhancing drugs as part of the Internet scam.

In June, the Steelers ended their relationship with Rydze, who had been on their medical staff for 21 years, working primarily on game day, after it was revealed in the investigation that he purchased $150,000 in testosterone and HGH with his own credit card. The Steelers have said there is no indication he was providing any hormone treatments to their players.

In a statement issued yesterday, Wilson said he took the drugs "trying to improve the quality of my life based upon my 20-plus years of living with diabetes."

He called it an "uninformed decision" and "an error."

"I had a very limited exposure to a substance," he said. "It did not have a positive effect on the quality of my life, and I soon discarded it. It was used only by me and not made available to anyone else. Clearly, as a coach and former player, I had no intention of trying to circumvent the boundaries of competition or fair play."

Wilson admitted, "I acted without proper medical supervision, and I would urge others to not make a similar mistake."

One source was skeptical of Wilson's diabetes-related explanation.

"You get a physician," he said. "It's not like he's got a terminal disease and he's looking for experimental drugs. People could understand that. They all plead ignorance when they get caught. If he's a citizen in the private sector, nobody cares. You don't do that in the NFL. It's one of the things you just know. You don't carry guns. You don't do drugs."

The Bears source knows questions will surface about whether Wilson was supplying steroids and HGH to players on the team that went to the Super Bowl last season.

"He was very quiet and kept to himself," the team source said. "If he did, it would shock me. Knowing his character and personality, I would be shocked if he supplied it. He's a very private guy. Very friendly. He was really into his body. A workout freak. He looked great. He was really into it. I'm not beating him up for that. Obviously, he became fanatical with it."

Aiello said there has been no indication whether the league will be given more names. "If there is more, we will deal with that," he said.

Wilson was an NFL quarterback for 19 seasons (1981-99) with the Vikings, Falcons, Saints, Cowboys and Raiders. He began his coaching career with the Cowboys in 2000 and stayed through 2002. Then Bill Parcells took over and Wilson went to Chicago. He returned to Dallas this season as the quarterbacks coach for Wade Phillips.

The NFL didn't have specific information from authorities on Harrison and Wilson until 10 days ago and acted quickly. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who was cooperative with the league's investigation, said yesterday of Wilson, "We understand and support the commissioner's decision."

For some reason...If what they say about Harrison is true...I have zero issue with it. Players trying to get back faster after an injury using whatever just seems not that big a deal. Especially in the NFL. Now of course that can be him just making up a bullshit excuse after being caught. And how can you separate the injury from the everyday use?

No wonder the Bears went to the Super Bowl!! Wade was their pusha! Well that and the most pussiest schedule ever in the history of the league.

Why do we care if coaches do hormones or steroids exactly? Are the substances in themsleves illegal (as opposed to only being prohibited for pro athletes)?

They pass on to the players is what they are concerned with. And HGH is some serious shit, that currently I don't believe they can successfully test for in sports.

Yeah, I don't condone Harrison's use of it, but I know why he did it and I can justify it. I'll miss Rodney for four games . At least when he comes back he'll be a beast!

I don't bash bonds. He's just doing what everyone else does so I could really care less. I never said I CONDONE what Harrison did, but I understand it. He's had 3 straight seasons with huge season ending or season altering injuries. Plenty of athletes have taken steroids or other shit over the years in order to speed up injury recovery. Now steroids is taboo so when guys do it, we get outraged.

There's a huge difference between taking them to heal quicker, and taking them to get ahead. Granted, I think Harrison was doing it for both reasons, but if it was merely to to recover, I'm not going to get outraged about it.

Technically, Harrison was doing it to not fall behind being that he is towards the end of his career. They should just let these guys go off the deep end and juice the shit out of their bodies, at least you know you'd have a level playing field then.

Yeah because Barry isn't old nor has he had any injury issues...

I'm not saying I'm for or against anyone using it, but seriously I love the justification athletes we 'like' get versus those we don't. This is barely a story on espn

HGH is such utter bullshit anyway. Almost no real results.

Bonds wasn't on HGH he was on "The Clear" which was an anabolic that was impossible to test for, HUGE difference.
