IF you breed a dog for aggression and give it a pack mentality if at anytime that dog wants to be the alpha you better be prepared to kill it yourself because you are going to be its target in a crisis situation.
I've dealt with many different pits and never had that happen to me, even dogs that had been fought for years. The misconception is that they are bred for aggression and that is not the case, most people don't understand what temperment means. I'm sure it does happen, and every dog that ever shows aggression towards humans should be put down, of any breed, that sucks that happened to your friend. All dogs have a pack mentality, it's the responsibility of the owner to remain dominant at all times and to assert the dominance of every human over the dog. These things are true of every breed though, it isn't breed specific. And even then dogs who have been exposed to this kind of lifestyle can overcome it with training and a proper household.

I just feel for the dogs. Also, this whole situation is putting the breed back in the news every day, talks of banning the breed, no talks of responsible ownership or the truths behind the breeding process, no they are only killers.

I see now. You're one of those people that looks for reasons to be offended. It must be frustrating to go through life like that.

I've never heard it called that but... It's a device which holds the female in place so the male can breed with her.

Couldn't you just lock them into a room when the female is in heat to achieve the same result?

Fighting dogs tend to fight, especially a female dog who is "game" and in heat. They would kill each other.

Pro breeders who are breeding fighting dogs, maybe.

Anyone who's breeding for show or for pets wouldn't want to introduce the traits of a dog that was so aggressive that it needed to be put in one.

Actually you would put a show dog in one to prevent injury. Even the most tame dogs can get rowdy during sex..

I suppose I could see that, but I do know my parents bred dogs for a few years, some of which went on to show, and didn't ever have to use anything like that.

So it's certainly not a universal practice.

No, it's not. It's used for larger dogs and dogs that can be aggressive (not towards humans, but each other) when in a primal mode such as mating.

They aren't 'rape stands', they are marital aids

PETA just likes to sensationalize everything.
