I fenced Epee during high school. You need so much goddamn upper body strength and even cardio workouts help to keep you going during matches which exhaust the shit out of you.

I anticipate having the exact opposite problem from the OP as far as equipment goes; I am short but broad-shouldered, so none of the jackets the salle I go to provides fits properly at all, and it will likely irk me into getting my own gear pretty quickly.

I'm pretty excited about getting started with this though, it's something I've always been interested in but never had a good opportunity to do.

Still going strong with this; I have a complete set of gear for myself now (mostly because I was tired of dealing with other people's man-stink) and am getting ready to start full-blown lessons next month.

It's a fuckload of fun, and a great workout to boot.
