Becuase some feel baseball in that time was very watered down and geared towards hitters. They were getting bigger and stronger and pitching quality was going way downhill. Personally, I look at it this way. If you can hit over 600 home runs in your career, props to you. 660 and up is a legendary club. Aaron, Ruth, Mays, Bonds. Plus, look at the way the game is evolving. The ERAs are rising and so are runs for the most part. Guys are hitting more and more home runs. By 2020, you'll probably see someone gunning for 900 (I still say 1000 is completely and utterly unreachable. You'd have to hit at least 50 a year for 20 years and that is NOT possible yet).

So in short, I'll congratulate bonds and giving him a clap from my house when he breaks it. Whether you love him or hate him, he's one of the all time greats (when you consider the fact that he could still run pretty well at 38 or so until his legs broke down). Do i think he deserves all the crap he gets from the media? Probably. He treats them like shit, so they treat him like shit back (this has been going on since his days in Pittsburgh). It's nice to see he'll almost definitely break the record in San Francisco though. He deserves a stoppage and a standing ovation. Let's hope Bud can actually stand up and applaud and even shake his hand without Tom Hicks telling him to do so.

Glavine getting 300 is impressive, but don't look now folks. Greg Maddux is at 340. 10 to 350 and that is a VERY exclusive club .

Maddux is one of the most under appreciated players in baseball to me. The guy is awesome and was one of the best fielding pitchers ever. He never had power and was somehow dominant.

What are you talking about? Yankee Stadium was made SHORTER, not longer, just cause of the way he hit.

Quote:
As Yankee Stadium owed its creation largely to Ruth, its design partially accommodated the game's left-handed-hitting slugger. Initially the fence was 295 feet from home plate down the right-field line and 350 feet to near right field, compared with 490 feet to the deepest part of center field, nicknamed Death Valley. Because bleacher fans in left-center field were considerably farther away from home plate (460 feet) compared with the right-field bleachers, those who sat in the former were considered "out in left field", another phrase that originated at Yankee Stadium. The right-field bleachers were appropriately nicknamed Ruthville
Yes center field was huge but Babe Ruth DIDN'T hit to center field... he always hit to the right. That's why the "real" people who follow baseball don't give much props to the "babe" for his home run record and more for his over all playing abilities and the fact he drew in large crowds of people in a time when baseball was struggling.

Honestly they need a uniform field size. Imagine going to a football game where the home team only had to go 40 yards across midfield to score.

I know that stadiums have personalities and history but when you build a park for one guy and he plays there 10+ years, yeah his stats will be skewed.

...4 straight Cy Young Awards? 16 Gold Gloves? Yep, he's not appreciated at all. You know, every announcer just says there's a living a legend on the mound every time he pitches...no big deal.

selig is by far the biggest piece of shit in the history of MLB commissioners, possibly comissioners in all sports. theres no denying that he was very aware of steroids being used in baseball all through the 90s. he was very aware that mcgwire and sosa were juicing but did he do shit? no, he did dick because their home run chase saved his sport from the 94 strike (btw selig was the acting commissioner during the strike, another reason he blows). then barry bonds, certifiably one of the best players in the game, is completely forgotten and is told hes over the hill cause we got these two jacked up meat heads knocking out balls left and right. in fact if i remember correct bonds barely made the all star ballot that year. so of course ol barry is gonna say fuck that shit if they can do it so can i and hit the juice and come out cranking homers. then jose canseco comes out with his book, yadda yadda yadda now bud selig cares about roids cause the public knows about it. go fuck yourself selig.

Buster Olney made a great point that Tom Glavine may be the last pitcher to ever hit 300 wins. With the way the game has changed since the 80s and even the early 90s, pitchers don't go as long and don't pitch as often. Now you barely see guys go on less than a full 5 days rest let alone 3 days rest. Not only that, but as Buster said, guys are put on the DL much faster than they used to due to bloated salaries.

The one streak that will never be broken is DiMaggio's 56 game hit streak. In my eyes, it's the best record in all of sports. Look to the fact that since 1970 Pete Rose is the only guy to come within 15 games of it (44), Molitor had 39 and Jimmy Rollins' streak doesn't count to me since it was over 2 seasons, but ending on 36 was impressive. So what you see is no one coming within even 10 games of the record.

Look at some of those streaks. I'd say DiMaggio's is probably the ultimate streak on that list, but they're all fairly absurd. I think when all is set and done, most fans appreciate the streaks more than the milestones. I don't think Ted Williams' consecutive games reaching base or DiMaggio's hit streak will ever be broken, but it's still impressive.

The more I thought about it though, the impossible streak is probably Hershieser's consecutive scoreless innings pitched record. It's the pitching equivalent of DiMaggio's record. The only reason it will never be broken is due to the fact that hitters are improving at a much faster rate than pitchers.

Cal Ripkin and Lou Gerhig asked me to tell you that they disagree.

Ripkins and DiMaggios will never be broken imo, at least in my lifetime. Can't see anyone hitting over 300 for more than 23 seasons either (ty cobb) and I definitely don't think we'll ever see someone pitch 40 consecutive complete games, go over 1001 innings without giving up a homer or basically any of the consecutive winning records pitchers had (shit pitchers now don't even start 30 games, much less win 40). Some of those old pitching records are just retarded, I almost feel like they should be wiped out haha.

It doesn't matter outside the 'baseball world'. He plays baseball, which he's appreciated in. Are his stats supposed to transcend the sport he plays in?
