Hopkins vs. Wright

anyone else watch this? not exactly the most exciting fight i've ever seen, but i was happy to see hopkins score another win, though it wasn't exactly in dramatic fashion. both fighters were really showing their age. i hope hopkins decides to quit while ahead and hang up the gloves after this.

I agree with the outcome of the fight. Hopkins is past his prime now. Hell, he's 42 years old, but he had a incredible run. I think his career will be seriously under-rated. He was a great champion.

Had RJJ hung it up after he beat Ruiz for the heavyweight title, his run would be underrated, but now, definitely not. Hopkins is showing his age yes, but he's still showing that he's one of the all time greats. He may not earn his nickname as the executioner anymore, but he's still my personal favorite (aside fron Vernon Forrest and that's simply because he could put sugar shane in his place whenever he damn well pleased).

On another note, has any sport done a WORSE job of showcasing it's young talent than boxing? They should be taking the younger guys and putting them again the established over the hill guys. Hell, fix a few fights to get them over the hump if you have to. Not like it doesn't happen anyways.

The problem with younger guys in boxing is that they spend the first 10-15 fights in 4 rounders against amateurs who can barely go pro or guys who are 9-15 and one fight away from being done for.

It takes a good 20 fights for them to even get a fight against someone who can be considered talented and a test of ability. By then the young fighter is 4-5 years into his career and isn't even young anymore.

Oh and I heard Hopkins is negotiating a fight with some Welshie next, so he isn't done yet.

Calzaghie? I think he's a welshie, but a WAY different weight class.

But yeah, that kid Khan or Kahn comes to mind. Every fight I've seen of it, it's just him demolishing some two bit piece of crap. Either way, that kid is going to be fucking legit.

Calzaghe is at 168, Hopkins is at 175, so only one weight class (I'd still never take it if I was Calzaghe).

Doesn't matter, Calzaghe and Kessler are signed up to fight next, should be pretty good (43-0 vs 39-0, England vs Denmark).

Yeah, I was pumped for that fight. We could see Calzaghe vs Hopkins IF he gets through Kessler (and he really should). I'd actually pay good money to see it in Vegas too.

Wright vs Hopkins was sad to watch just because either one of them should be wearing Jermaine "The Split Decision" Taylor's belt right now. What a fucking joke. The latest Taylor debacle was the single most boring match I ever seen in my life. But yeah, a Wright fight is only exciting if you are some sort of boxing scholar. His arsenal consists of the cover up, the duck and cover, the great wall, and the 'ole one-two. He does it really, really well though.

5 white heavyweight champs and none of them will fight the other. Yawn.

Still, I've seen plenty of good fights, but most of them involve two equally soft hitting and hard headed mexicans blasting each other in the face 50 times a round. The upper classes have all been two guys afraid to come within five steps of each other, and heavyweight is Klitcko turning everyone into a punching bag with his constant lefts in the face + hey where the fuck did that straight right come from routine.
