There is some confusion to who to believe the NYT, or elsewhere.

For example check out S.I.'s truth and rumor page:
FanNation | Truth&Rumors | NBA

First article is NBA let ref work under suspicion, while the second is NBA had no knowledge. But they talk about two different things. The NBA was unaware until recently about the FBI's investigation. The NBA was aware that Tim Donaghy was suspicious and hired their own private investigator over a year ago.

All this tells me is that the NBA doesn't even have this excuse anymore: we knew he was suspicious but the FBI didn't have a solid case and asked us not to compromise their investigation.

Edit for clarification: The Denver Post isn't the only place reporting that the NBA new, including other New York papers.

As much as I dislike David Stern, him being a former lawyer, and obsessed with the image of the NBA as a marketable product with international potential. I have a real hard time believing that he would have allowed this ref to continue to work games, let alone a playoff game had he known about it beforehand.

Say what you want about Stern, but he is a very by the book kind of guy.

Dark: NYT and AP are reporting that an anon source said the NBA found out after the finals about the ref. A lot of papers pick up the AP, so I would tend to believe that they will recycle what the AP is reporting. Having said that, just because the papers are reporting it, doesnt make it true one way or the other. My thoughts/opinion read above.

Listened to a Brandon Lang interview on the radio. This guy has an immense knowledge of sports and gmabling in general. He actually called this happening about a year or so ago with a Stephen A. Smith interview, pretty damn amazing.

Here is a abcsports interview. Good read

Very interesting article Dis, thanks.

Source: NBA thought Donaghy was doing great job

Tim Donaghy, the NBA referee at the center of an FBI gambling investigation, received an above-average evaluation from his superiors for the past season, according to a person close to the embattled ref. "The league was extremely pleased with his progress," the source said. "They thought it was his best year." Donaghy, 40, allegedly bet on NBA games, including some that he officiated during the past two seasons. He resigned less than two weeks ago. Despite claims from friends and neighbors yesterday that Donaghy had been the target of a private investigator hired by the NBA to look into his gambling habits, the league continued to increase his workload. "The playoffs are a reward," said a retired NBA referee, who asked not to be identified. "(Donaghy) made it to the second round (of the playoffs). From everything I heard, he was on track to referee third-round games next season." -- NY Daily News

Not to beat a dead horse but here are the bad calls from Game 3 if anyone was curious to watch them again:
YouTube - Did Tim Donaghy and crew fixed game 3 of Suns-Spurs?

Not worth commenting about, just putting it out there

David Stern doing a live press conference right now on Donaghy, NBAs policy on dirty refs, the extent of their own investigation of Donaghy, and the extent of what he can tell us about the FBI investigation. (lol investigation investigation)

I'm not sure why you guys think ref calls can only affect a few points.

If you've ever played sports competitively you'd know that ref calls (in any sport, really) directly affect the momentum of the game.

It sucks as a sports fan, but the FBI were looking at this with a much bigger picture in mind than an NBA ref who made some really poor decisions. This is more mob works behind the scene.

I feel the NBA has hit rock bottom. It can only get better (and I pray it does) from here.

As a side note: Due to the focus on terrorism since 9/11, the cosa nostra has basically gotten back on its feet after the massive takedowns in the 80s.

I've heard a few people say this now, do you have any sources for this. I'm not trying to be an ass; I'm just curious.

I know I read it in a news article like last Friday or something, and it was completely unrelated to the NBA ref story. I think it was about a trial going on in Chicago about the guy who was the inspiration for Joe Pesci's character in Casino.

If you go to Yahoo News and type in Joe Pesci in the news search box you'll bring up a bunch of articles (too lazy to link them all).
