Aye. Well, the initial thought was it was just the mob squeezing him. Like Simmons said, we should of known something like this was going on after the ticket scandal.

I've got 50 bucks on Bennett Salvatore. If he's not involved, I'm calling shenanigans on the whole investigation.

My question is, what about other sports. I have seen some SHITTY officiating in College Football games, and NFL games. I mean absolute blown calls that completely boggle the mind. Why would it just be the NBA?

Because it's the easiest to fix. You can fix spreads with late fouls, technicals. You can also fix the over/under with a shit load of fouls. Harder to do in football actually.

Steelers obviously had help from the mob in the Superbowl. The Seahawks should be wearing a ring right now.

Ha, Game 5 of the Heat/Mav's series was one of the fishiest NBA games I've ever watched, especially Salvatore's call in OT. 25 ft attempts for Wade in one game....right.

As for Donaghy, the first thing I thought about when I heard he officiated game 3 was the 3 second late ghost foul on Ginobli right when the Suns were gaining some momentum. The fact that it turns out Donaghy actually made that call is completely unbelievable. Phoenix fans have a right to bitch, imo.

I realize that article is pure conjecture Dis, but you act like your Spurs are untouchable, oh and please ignore the ref that was helping mkay? I'm not whining, hell I don't even care about the NBA(I'm sure I will get a few replies about how I must since Im posting) and hope that it collapses since it's just a big jungleball game. I just find it funny that you have taken a stance of "it didnt matter that the ref is corrupt, the outcome would have been the same." You dont KNOW that.

How demoralizing is it to be on the other team and feel like the refs are against you? I bet a few people would stop trying so hard and just go through the motions. I'm sure you will come back yelling at me how he fixed the POINT SPREAD, and lalalala the rest of what I said. Keep capitalizing, italicizing POINT SPREAD all you want, but you don't have a fucking clue if it affected the outcome of the game. NOT A CLUE, cuz you didnt play the fucking game - you watched it. Now if one of the Suns players comes out and says it didnt matter then I'm sure it didnt matter. Until then I'm suggesting it did affect the series.

Because in any sport, it would be pretty difficult to not blatantly fix the outcome. However in the NBA, late in the fourth quarter, you could call a few phantom fouls and get the losing team closer or the winning team further ahead to beat the spread or the over/under.

In the NBA you can pretty much put points on the board as a referee. The team still has to cross the goal line in the NFL/College sports, you still have to hit the ball in baseball.

Yeah. NBA is the only of the 4 big sports (besides the NHL's penalty shot, which is rare) where a foul/penalty can result directly to points. Because of that, it can affect wins and losses and the point spread.

Fixing the point spread can very much so have an effect on the game. The difference between being down 3 or 4 with a minute to go and being down 7 or 8 with the same minute to go can greatly alter your strategy and gameplan.

Being down just a few means you can get a lucky steal, drain a 3 maybe tack on a foul and be tied or back in the lead.. being down more means you are fouling and praying they miss, which has like a 2% success rate.

You know what sucks is that if the Suns win next season everyone will say Stern took pity and ordered the refs to fix the games!!!

This whole thing just really sucks for the NBA in general; it was starting to pick up speed again, really, for the first time in the post-Jordan era with all the young stars. All the revamped advertising and reinvention of the league's image that's been going on the last few years could be undone rather quickly if this bullshit turns out to be widespread.

The question is ALWAYS going to be there now for sketchy calls; its like a trust has been openly violated and the whole integrity of the entire sport is ruined.

Damn when this couldn't get worse, when did the NBA know?

ESPN.com - Blogs - Chris Sheridan Blog

January, and they let him keep refereeing games.

And for those interested, in the stats on referees.

FOX Sports on MSN - NBA - NBA referee statistics, since 2005-06

2. When was the NBA informed that Donaghy was under investigation by the FBI?

The Denver Post reported Sunday that the answer to that question is January, which, if true, would mean the NBA allowed Donaghy to continue refereeing games, including playoff games, despite knowing he might be crooked. Who in the league office signed off on that?

UPDATE: The New York Times reported Monday, quoting two anonymous sources who had been briefed on the investigation, that the NBA had no knowledge of Donaghy's betting and questions as to whether he influenced the outcomes of games until after the season.

Also, the AP is reporting today that a person with knowledge of the FBI investigation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the NBA was unaware of the FBI investigation until after the NBA Finals.

3. What about all the red flags?

According to data compiled by Stats LLC and reported in the New York Post, Donaghy led the NBA in technical fouls called, whistling 177 of them -- 20 more than anyone else. Donaghy also ranked fourth in blowing personal fouls; was third in ordering free throws and second for fouling out players for the 2006-07 season.

The NBA is meticulous in gathering data on its referees and the calls they make, and if it had a referee calling an inordinate number of technicals, you'd expect they'd speak to Donaghy about it, no?

Also, the Post reported that NBA officials knew that Donaghy was gambling on football and ordered him to stop.

Further, the New York Times reported Sunday that since Jan. 1, Donaghy refereed in 11 games in which the consensus Las Vegas line moved two points or more: "The team on which bettors wagered heavily enough to move the line that far won seven of those 11 games. …

"On Jan. 15, the Philadelphia 76ers were originally favored to beat the Toronto Raptors by a point. Bets came in so heavily on the Raptors that they eventually were favored to win by a point instead. The Raptors won in a blowout, 104-86.

"Two nights later, so much money was bet on the Phoenix Suns against the Houston Rockets that the consensus Las Vegas line, which opened with the Suns favored by 4½ points, moved to 8 by tip-off. The Suns won by 9, 100-91."

*The update confirms that the knew AFTER the NBA finals. The stats on this guy are interesting nonetheless.
