+20 Internets | [NHL] Offseason Talk What the hell, let's start a thread to discuss what's going on over the summer. Obviously things will get really interesting when the draft comes around, and especially after July 1st when all the free agent signings will happen (come home Smytty, we love you!). But a few interesting things have happened already: TSN : NHL - Canada's Sports Leader Ouch. "Hey Jimmy, you did a good job last year, but you're being demoted. And we're bringing in a coach notorious for being a control freak asshole." I can't say I blame him for staying on, he'd have a hard time finding a better job. But that must hurt. That said, Calgary wasn't nearly the team they were under Sutter, and if not for Kipper they'd have been nowhere near as good. Not sure on the Keenan hiring. Thankfully Sutter is the GM, and other than Sather and Burke he may be the only GM in the league who can keep Keenan under his thumb. It'll be interesting, to say the least. I think Keenan's fairly overrated as far as coaches go, his record is long, but not exactly amazing. No cup that I'm aware of. Barely above .500. Known to have feuded openly with damn near every star on every team he's coached, although Iginla is probably one of the best personalities in the league, so hopefully that won't be an issue. Well actually, I hope the Flaming Cocksuckers fall flat. TSN : NHL - Canada's Sports Leader TSN : NHL - Canada's Sports Leader TSN : NHL - Canada's Sports Leader Balsillie's got balls. They're already taking deposits on season tickets and boxes for the Hamilton Predators. He hasn't even successfully bought the team yet, let alone jumped through the hoops to get it relocated. Good (and obvious) to see that there's a lot of support I guess. This will definitely raise eyebrows at the NHL's offices, as well as in Buffalo, Detroit, and Toronto. |

| I hear of talk about Burke going after Drury or Briere. With Selanne really looking like he wants to retire, Anaheim is going to need another forward. In some off season off topic kinda, Im sitting here ready to watch the NHL awards, and they have some UFC thing on, WTF?! |

+20 Internets | Anaheim absolutely cannot afford either of those guys, not if they want to keep Giguiere. And even if they don't, it would still be iffy. You don't want to pin yourself up against the cap, and then be like "whoops, Pronger, Getzlaf, and Perry all just got hurt" and be totally fucked. |

| I doubt Burke will give Giguere a ton more. Its Burke, he knows Giguere is good, but hes no Louongo or Kippy, and wont pay a rediculous number. If they do raise the cap, one of those forwards would fit in fine. |

| Lidstorm wins the Norris making me happy. Chelios is on board for another year, and Hasek wants back in. I'm not opposed to having Hasek back but I hate the idea of giving him a contract where the bulk of his pay doesn't come from performance incentives. Nashville has some decent UFA's coming up on the block and god knows they aren't going to make the slightest effort to resign a single one of them. Last edited by Ishad : 06-15-2007 at 05:04 AM. |

| There will be no Pred by November. Even with the team playing there another year, they won't be worth anything. As to Keenan...hahaha. Hahaha. And Ha! It's seriously funny shit. He's a good coach, but not exactly what you would consider a nice person. Oh well, it's all about results. And Eomer, Keenan does have a cup. New York in 94. And the barely .500 record can be atributed to coaching basement dwelling teams for the last 10 odd years. |

| Fuck me I'm an Oilers fan so I get the pleasure of hearing Lowe say he is going to make a couple of major moves prior to the draft, and sign a couple of high end free agents. Then not be surprised when he does jack. |

| i cannot even get my head around GM's giving Keenan another shot. Look for disaster and a one season run as coach in Calgary, if he makes it that long. Looking for the Kings to do *something* to show that they felt the sting of the Ducks winning the cup. As a 25+ year sufferer, this is probably the most telling off season ever for what King's ownership really cares about. Jiggy will get a ridiculous offer from someone who has cap room but a team that stinks. Thats a no brainer. |

+20 Internets | Dang, Columbus stole our assistant GM. My money's on Howson not lasting much more than a year. Columbus was desperate for a GM for a couple reasons: a) the draft is right away, and it's probably a good idea to have someone in place for it and b) no one wants to work with Hitchcock. It'll be interesting to see what happens there. I'd be shocked if you don't see the Oilers make at least a couple trades prior to or at the draft. We've got a bazillion picks, and not a hell of a lot of use for them. |

But overall I'd be tempted to agree with you. It's either going to go really really well (ie. hello Mr. Stanley) or really really poorly (ie. Keenan lasts just long enough to alienate Iginla and Kipper so that they ask for trades). And yes, Keenan is here 2 years tops.

You would think they would make some moves but its usually not the case the Pronger/Peca deals not withstanding.

| Keenan is not new NHL material. The Flames will be boring to watch, will take excessive penalties, and half the roster will be disgruntled with him and the other half will be in fear of him. Sounds like a fun season. I hope the Blues get Cherapanov (sp) in the draft. Hopefully the lack of transfer agreement with let him drop that far.
