Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin are the three that come to my mind and I'm a fairly casual fan. I watch sportscenter enough to know them, but if I asked my friend Matt, he could name 40.

Yeah, those are the three big ones, for sure. But there's a changing of the guard at every position. Pronger, Lidstrom and Niedermayer continue to be the best defensemen, but guys like Phaneuf and Weber will surpass them within a few years. Luongo took a Vancouver team that should have finished dead last in the NW div and got them to the second round virtually on his back (while Brodeur looked human in his series). And there's so many young forwards on a team like Buffalo or Anaheim alone it's mind boggling. (Getzlaf and Perry, to name two. Why the fuck did Edmonton get pretty boy, no heart Lupul dammit?)

A lot of that is being driven by the salargy cap system, which IMO has been a pretty big success. Of course, seeing as how my team went on a miraculous cup run the year after the new CBA came in because we suddenly had money to spend, well I guess I'm biased . Although honestly I'd trade that cup run for MacTavish getting his ass fired, instead of a 3 year extension. You know your coach is shitty when he's constantly passed over by the national team in the off-season, even though he's best buds with Gretzky and Lowe.

Eomer, I've always wondered this about Canada and I hope you can answer. Is the NHL or the junior hockey leagues and such they have up there more popular? Most canadians I've discussed hockey with in person don't much follow the NHL but are diehards for their local leagues but I see almost no mention of them in the online communities I frequent.

Theres no way Burke would get rid of Getzlaf or Perry right now. They are the future of this club. He got Lupul and Smid (who will be an awesome D man) becuase thats the best offer he could get for Pronger without taking too much of a loss.

Oh yeah, and dont forget about Kunitz for one of those young guns.

I think that Lowe got Lupul for two reasons: 1) at that point, he was the most developed of the three and had just come off a pretty good regular season, and a playoffs where he scored 4 goals in a single game and 2) he's an Edmonton boy (my uncle is his agent), and they've been trying to get local players. Over half the team is from Alberta. I'd bet that last summer, Burke would have happily given us either of the other two instead of Lupul.

Ah well.

Pro football all the way (GO EAGLES!). Except when the men and women's World Cup is getting played, then futbol supplants it.

The NBA makes me ill for the most part, and while I love my Phillies I don't watch baseball all that often.

I like the strides the new NFL commissioner is making with the riff raff in football - very serious spanks on Pacman and Chris Henry, and something tells me Mike Vick is going to get the hammer too with all this dogfighting shit.

That guy knows that image is everything, and he knows that the NFL reigns in popularity across the USA precisely because the NBA and the MLB dropped the ball and let their images get shattered. MLB with its big strike and big name players juicing ("I'm not here to talk about the past LOL"); the NBA with its thug image (which it is trying to fix, and their new vanguard of players are exciting again).

How in the hell is the NHL second, when it regularly gets ratings about the same as women's college softball?

The NFL is the only team sport where I can watch it almost regardless of who is playing. No rooting interest required, though if the Steelers are playing it's a lot more entertaining.

NBA I only really get into during the playoffs. Used to be way into the NCAA tourney but haven't really paid much attention to it lately. And hockey I only care about when my Penguins are playing. Got a lot more fun this year after some very weak years there. Baseball I used to watch, but 14 straight years of being on the bottom of the entire league and not even trying to compete has made it hard to muster up much feeling for the Pirates.

Of course, that's team sports=) Does Ninja Warrior count as a sport? After the NFL I probably follow UFC/Pride/MMA stuff more than any other sport now.

Love anything NFL, Braves baseball, and Virginia Tech football games. I watch NBA/NCAA championships, could care less about the rest of the season. I doubt I've ever watched an entire NHL game, but I've been to some east coast hockey league games. Other than that I still enjoy a good boxing match.

As for why NHL seems overrepresented here, its because nerds love hockey. Science is still baffled.

I enjoy doing the Sunday sports bar thing for NFL. That game was meant to be watched four or more at a time.

Nerd interest in hockey dates back to 1994 where the techmology magicians at Fox introduced the glowing puck and made broadcasts look like players were shooting lazer beams all over the ice.

Soccer,
Rowing,
Sailing,
Track n Field,
Football

Those are my favorites across a diverse category. Don't get me wrong though. I like Football almost as much as I like Soccer. They youth play experience tilted Soccer for me, though.

While I am a big NFL and NCAA Football fan, baseball is by far my favorite sport to watch and play. But I also watch NBA games and usually catch most of the NHL playoffs.
