+22 Internets | Lol at the UFC. Just came out that they will be having a free event on spike the same night as the affliction PPV

+11 Internets | I seriously doubt the Affliction event will have more viewers. Even the free portion. That part will have lesser names, and it's on Fox Sports. And the PPV portion, despite being an awesome card, is still a PPV. And not UFC. In the end they are putting together a hastily thrown together card with some possibly entertaining fights(Vera vs. Wandy?!?), it *will* take viewers away from the Affliction event, and it will have more viewers than it. So Dana can look at it and talk his shit about how they aren't in the UFC's league and blah blah blah. And God forbid the UFC card ends up being really good(like a lot of Fight Nights are), or the Affliction fights are snoozefests. So, while I dislike them doing it and I am not sold on it as a great idea, from a business perspective I don't really see it as a bad idea.

I liked the UFC because, among other things, it felt like less of a "business" than boxing. While I realize this isn't a direct parallel, this shit stinks of something I could see Don King doing. Dana White can't get Fedor to fight for the UFC? Try to make sure that the less informed viewership never watches him fight. It's just kinda gross. We know from boxing's sad history that what is good for the individual and especially the promoter (In this case Dana White) is usually awful for the sport overall. The more the UFC and mixed martial arts in general becomes a business, the more I hate it. *shrug*

+11 Internets | Remember when I posted that Spider was moving up to LHW? Silva-Irvin, Vera-Andy to Lead July 19 UFC Yeah, and against James Irvin on the July 19th card. And Vera is fighting Reese Andy. At least they're not half assing the card.

+22 Internets | This UFC event is going to kill the affliction card with the way it's looking. I have no idea what the statistics are but I would say only about 15% of U.S. viewers follow anything thats not UFC related. Pretty much most bars wont bother with affliction since everyone just thinks MMA is UFC. Brand new organization that is paying the fighters very well with little advertisment competing against the biggest MMA business out there.... Doesnt look well Side note: Really dont care about anything on the Affliction card with the exception of the Fedor/Sylvia fight. Everything else is horrible match making. My prediction is Sylvia wins if he can keep it from going to the ground but since this is in a ring sylvia will get raped most likely.

| A few years ago this conversation wouldn't even come up, but it's been so damn long since Fedor has shown his game that it seems everyone is doubting his ability to beat Sylvia. I just can't see Fedor losing. One thing he has always managed to do is make average fighters look like ragdolls. Sylvia has never seemed anything more than mediocre to me, despite putting up a decent fight against Nog, and if there's any fighter out there who has the experience and the skills to use Sylvia's size against him, I'd say that fighter would be Fedor. I know this kind of thing is silly talk, but what do you think the outcome would be of putting Anderson Silva against some of the big guys out there? Do you think he'd get overpowered, or could he cut through for a KO? |
