+22 Internets | Really sucks that Kimbo is the face of MMA. How long do people think it will be until MMA is in the olympics??

| Pride Never Die | never...it's not possible. You see all that headgear and shit they make them wear in boxing...imagine the shit they'll make them wear in the Olympics for MMA. I could see BJJ eventually, but not pure MMA.

They have discussed doing "No-Gi Submission Grappling" however, but they won't call it BJJ. America already dominated the FILA world grappling championships, taking gold medal in EVERY SINGLE DIVISION, and America will dominate the Olympics in this sport as well. ![]() Source: Spoiler Alert, click show to read: --- If they ever do "MMA" it would probably look more like "Combat Sambo." +24 Internets | Not sure how they'd do a weeklong tournament in MMA without ruining it tbh. I personally wouldn't mind if it was, well, like Bloodsport, but I doubt that'd attract the top competitors and it wouldn't really be fair. The guy who got a lucky knockout in round one would have a huge advantage over the guy who had to fight a slobberknocker with a Mark Hunt or a Jon Fitch.

+20 Internets | They should of brought back Pankration in the Athens Olympics when they had the chance. I'd love to see MMA in the Olympics but they would probably neuter it pretty bad. I wonder what the injury rate is like for Combat Sambo tourneys. Last thing you would want is to see someone like Steve Jennum come in a win gold. |

| Now there's a fight I would love to see. Franklin is one those guys I love to watch. Its a shame he couldn't pull off anything against Silva. He used to be the poster boy for the UFC and now he barely gets any press. boooo! |

+8 Internets | I think Franklin would be good if he'd switch his strength training program from bodybuilder bullcrap to a real Power oriented routine. That guy needs to do some Cleans and Sprints. As for moving up in weight to fight A. Silva, GSP would be really stupid to accept that. Not just because A. Silva has a HUGE height and reach advantage, but because A silva is probably clocking in about 212. People don't realize how hard it is to pack on good muscle. 15 lbs is a LOT of weight. First, you have to pack on weight, 20-25lbs by doing a shitload of hypertrophy work (High reps, medium weight), eating a LOT or dropping your "cardio" program, then you have to convert all of that slow twitch muscle to fast twitch via a Strength and Power program (low reps, high weight and "fast moving lifts" such as the clean and jerk, snatch, sprints, and general plyometrics.) On a body like GSPs It'd take at least 6 months to move up 1 division "solidly" because not only is he probably borderline legal on testosterone, but he's already probably consuming 5k calories a day.

Honestly I love doing it, I have tried to recruit so many people who "used to train" to no avail, though. I think everyone should pick up some form of self defense. | |

Thats one of the things that i'm curious about with Machida. How much does it help him since he isnt cutting 20-25 pounds the day before the fight like most of the other fighters and is comming in at full health.

+1 Internets | I never really understood weight cutting, to be honest. I realize it's a tradition from western wrestling and boxing, but it doesn't make any sense to me. The process sucks immensely, it's horrible for your body, you feel like shit afterward and can't compete at your best, and it totally defeats the purpose of having weight divisions. If they're going to have a "205 pound division" then the fighters should weigh 205 on fight day, not 205 the day before and 215-225+ when they walk in the ring. If they weighed fighters the day before and ringside pre-fight I think we'd see much better competitions with a lot less gassing in rounds 2-3. |

+22 Internets | They need to figure something out with the HW gap also. 205-265 is kind of rediculous I think

| Been training at a Gracie/Barra school but now that I've moved I'm faced with the choice of a Royler Gracie school or a Sombo/American Kickboxing school....not sure what I really want to do at this point because I want a black belt in BJJ but I eventually wanted to move into a more no gi focused school as well as start some stand up training...choices choices.

+8 Internets | Weight cutting sucks, but is almost absolutely necessary at a certain point. The hardest part for me is getting quality sleep during a cut. However, Melatonin is your friend. The last tournament I didn't cut at, I was at the bottom of our bracket (179-199lbs) and fought someone who cut from 215. I lost to this person. I started Muay Thai 4 weeks ago. Surprisingly it's a lot easier to cope with than I thought it would be: I can fight from my square stance (opposed to boxing) I can clinch, and you can even trip people. However, I get kicked a lot. My hands and guard are solid but my legs are black and blue ![]() Quote:
A BJJ blackbelt is worth it's weight in gold. Also, Royler is one of the world's premier No-Gi grapplers. I'm sure they have it. Personally, I love to grapple, and I love the Gi. I do no-gi regularly, but it just doesn't have the soul! Also, what Sambo school? Finding a good Sambo teacher state-side is very tough. I got lucky, my first grappling coach is the former coach of the Polish Olympic/National judo team. He has a strong Russian style (all of the eastern block countries do.) But, honestly, unless it's Gokor Chivinchyns gym, you might want to have a close look at it. The new "unified rules" have a 205-220 category. They should have called it Cruiser weight tho, instead of try to change the names.
