Dream3

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Hansen/Alvarez was a hell of a fight. Alvarez' striking looked really crisp for most of the fight. And Hansen's ground game was looking really good. I was pretty surprised neither one managed to end it. Alvarez got the decision, and rightly so. Really entertaining fight though. And the crowd fucking *loved* Alvarez once it was over.

I almost turned it off and went to bed before the last fight(Ishida vs. Uno) because I didn't feel like watching some stall-fest and it was like 7 am. Glad I decided against it. Uno looked great and it was an entertaining fight from start to finish. I was laying down alone on my couch watching and actually jumped up and cheered when Uno sunk in that RNC.

Mayhem destroyed the poor can they put in with him. One thing I've never liked about the Japanese shows is their willingness to put sacrificial lambs in the ring.

Manhoef won but frankly did not look impressive. He was getting controlled and pretty much out struck. Managed a reverse on the ground and landed a big knee to the back/side of his opponent's head and ended it.

Non spoiler part:

The boxing type ring still does, always has, and always will SUCK for MMA. It is not made for ground fighting. You should not need 20 Japanese guys on watch to pull the ropes 6 inches whenever someone decides to grapple. And my least favorite thing in MMA is restarts once the fighters get under the ropes or whatever. I'd rather watch Justin McCully fight Tim Sylvia butt naked than see restarts. They completely interrupt the flow of the fight, and it's impossible to get the 2 fighters back in the exact same position so the ref ends up effecting the fight directly rather than just as an arbiter.

Ring = Great for striking. Boxing, Kickboxing, MT, K-1, whatever. But it is just not made for grappling. Even when standing and grappling it still interferes because it's not made for 300-500lbs of fighters leaning against is and struggling this way and that for position.

Ring sucks for MMA and if you say it's better you are a fucking idiot. You can say you like it more and that just makes you a jackass, but if you claim it is actually better designed for the sport you are just an asshole. Who should die. From AIDS. While on fire. And falling down the stairs. Into a bear trap.

Some brutal knees last night.

Yeah, as much as I hate fence hugging its much better then the constant restarts, being able to fall out of the ring to get out of submissions and the general clusterfuck that occurs when you try to grapple near the ropes of a ring.

Pro Elite and Dream announced a partnership where they'll share fighters and refs and help promote eachother in other markets.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
At a pre-fight press conference held on Saturday in Japan for Sunday’s DREAM.3, officials from both Dream and ProElite, Inc. announced a working relationship between the two promotions that will include sharing of fighters and referees, as well as co-promoted shows in the future.

“In the last year ProElite and EliteXC and other brands have made a lot of progress, and some of our progress is due in part to our relationship with FEG and now with Dream,” said ProElite executive William Kelly. “We are sharing fighters. We are sharing referees. We intend to do co-promotions with Dream both in Japan and in the U.S.”

Kelly also mentioned possibly taking co-promoted shows between Dream and EliteXC to places like England and Korea in the future. He commented on the strong relationship between ProElite and television giants CBS and Showtime, and indicated that they will work to present EliteXC and Dream co-promoted shows on the networks.

ProElite also announced the intention of opening offices in Japan, with the hopes of putting on an EliteXC show there at some point in the future.

On the current Dream card set to take place on Sunday, two EliteXC fighters are already competing, as Nick Diaz faces Katsuya Inoue and Eddie Alvarez squares off in the second round of the lightweight Grand Prix against Joachim Hansen.

ProElite executive and former ICON Sport owner T. Jay Thompson also mentioned names like Kimbo Slice, Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler, and Jason Miller as other U.S. stars that the promotion would like to introduce to Japanese fans in the future.

Also, the IFL is going to debut a 6 sided ring in August. Because obviously the reason they are failing is the boxing ring and obviously the solution is one with more corners.

I think the ring is better for the fans at the event, since there's much better visibility. I've never been to an event, but if I was going to one I think I'd prefer a ring.

I've only been to a ring event but I think the visibility has more to do with how far away your seats are and if they have a video feed of the event going at the sametime than whether or not it's a ring or cage event.

I've never understood why they don't do a plexiglass type material instead of fencing. I'm not positive that there's a material that would be both strong and flexible like the cage, but I would think that there is. This would solve both visibility issues and the grabbing of the fence/ropes.

This was brought up before and sounds like a good idea in theory, but not in reality. Plastic would be hard and would get filthy with 2 sweaty and bloody dudes bashing in to it.

The live fans thing is a decent point though. I watch on TV and we get the best angles, not sure how it would be for live fans. Going to some smaller shows this summer so I'll see what it's like in person finally at least. I know some of you have been to UFC shows, how was it and where were your seats?

Yeah, blood and sweat would smear all over plexiglas. Probably cause more injuries then the normal fence aswell. Not to mention with all the lights and little airflow the ring would probably turn into an oven.

Much more fun to whack them with a wiffle bat.

Mir, Noguiera get TUF 8 nods - MMA - Yahoo! Sports

What a joke that Frank Mir gets a title shot for having done nothing for the last few years except for Lesnar. It's pretty sad the heavyweight division is what it is in the UFC and that most of the top talent is in other org's. If Kimbo by some act of god pans out for EliteXC the UFC won't be the top dog anymore. I dare to say he could become the Tyson of MMA(hopefully minus the trainwreck he turned into).

Err...yeah. Kimbo, by himself, will have more charisma than Liddel, Wanderlei and Anderson Silva, GSP, Matt Serra, etc. combined. Until Elite XC gets more TV spots and more fighters with personality that consistantly win they can't even touch UFC. But I still love Elite

I don't know whats worse, the fact the HW title is on hold for another 8 months or that Mir gets a title shot.

I know the UFC HW division is in shambles but I figured the winner of Werdum/Vera would be next in line.
