| Negative. We always referred to a male officer as "Sir" and a female officer as "ma'am".

| He has been watching too much Battlestar Galactica. Edit: Also, when then Senator Obama visited OIF/OEF last year, I watched a Colonel correct an airman for calling him "Sir". Of course, he made the same mistake a few moments later. Last edited by Vafra; 06-21-2009 at 03:41 PM.. |

| I was wrong. I was told by an Army captain that it is currently acceptable to call a female officer Sir or Ma'am, but this is coming from a weekend warrior. Could just be an Army thing, or a Guard thing or maybe just a northerner thing, or he could just be retarded.

And yes she DID refer to him as General several times both before and after this exchange. I'll go ahead and let you do the research on that since you care so much. The other parts of the clip you don't see are the General saying "Yes ma'am" and "no ma'am" a good dozen or so times before she finally said anything, which she did politely and he politely agreed to. Are you people really that starved for anything tangible to hold on to that you flip out over something that happens on both sides of the aisle every single day? Watch CSPAN for fucks sake and you'll see 4 or 5 dudes A DAY correct people on how to talk when inside the Capital building. Both civilians and military. Did you give a shit when Bush jumped down reporters throats for calling him sir? I bet not. Pop corn In UltraSlo motion - Watch more Funny Videos

Call someone by their proper title the first few times, then as an interview or conversation lengthens revert to sir or ma'am. Otherwise long titles such as Senator, Your Honor, etc. become very cumbersome. For example, if I'm being interviewed by a judge in court I will call them Your Honor a couple of times, then use sir or ma'am. I've never had a judge call me down on it. In a meeting with a ranking officer, even as high as major or chief, I've done the same with the same results. People have their panties in a wad over this clip because it's pedantic and comes across as arrogant. Most people feel like politicians are out of touch and this really conveys that.
