I've been running ubuntu since heron came out in april and there's a fairly stiff learning curve involved with it. Compiz fusion is very pretty but a little resource hungry.

Download Ubuntu here
Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS (Hardy Heron)
You can also dualboot windows and Ubuntu if you like

Hmm actually installed Ubuntu on my Dell laptop over last night (Took So long because I had to resize my Vista partition down 30GB so I have plenty of space on both OS') and was shocked at how it was a really easy experience, even making it into a dual boot. The new Ubuntu release seems very stable so far, I guess we will see how it holds up for work and school.
