It's funny that the state of society in the US is such that a woman killing a kitten is more offensive and than a group of people stoning a female human.

At least the stoning thing is a reflection on the state of ANOTHER society somewhere, else, where as the kitten thing is just some fucked up individual.

The stoning, while unnecessary, inhumane, or however you want to describe it, was done because she had the reputation of being a prostitute (I believe that's what the narrator said if memory serves me right).
