pretty weak martial arts training too, I got a friend that does traditional Japenese martial arts, he comes out to the bar after leaving the dojo with like a black eye and a huge bruised cut on his forehead and i'm like, "shit dude wtf" and he's like, "oh no big deal, i just got hit with a kama in the face a couple times".

if the students aren't getting hurt, they aren't going to learn anything useful in a real situation.

This isn't even remotely true, but we probably don't want to hijack this thread into that particular discussion.

It's not necessary to come away from every class bruised in order to learn effective self-defense skills.

i'd argue that it may be necessary, but it all depends. my only argument would be that a real situation may cause an emotional response and adrenaline rush which may have drastic consequences. staying as calm as possible is best when you're actually trained, but i think it can be hard to tell how you will react in a real situation unless you're actually in one. the problem, of course, is that getting smacked in the face in a dojo, while simulating pain quite well, may not evoke the emotional response a real fight will because one knows it isn't real.

i am a fan of toughening oneself physically though, which includes taking blows regularly. again, it all depends on the fighting style, how serious you are, et cetera.

There's a big, big difference between alive training with some contact (which is good) and going away from every training session bruised.

You want enough contact that you're not going to be surprised or completely thrown off by the reality of getting hit in an actual fight; but you need to balance that with being able to avoid injuries such that you're able to train to your highest potential.

When you see someone who is injured all the time from their martial arts training, your thought shouldn't be "wow, that's a really hardcore class!", your thought should be "that's a shitty instructor that doesn't know how to run controlled training sessions."
