The Liz Wooly anti eq website

Just genuinely curious, but am i the only one that thinks her website is a good thing? She honestly just seems to want to help people who are addicted to MMORPG, and we all know that they can be addicting. She doesn't want these games shut down, she just wants companies to acknowledge that they're addictive, and provide help to players addicted. I predict that she gets her way in the future, i believe that MMORPG are a new form of addiction, i think it's about as addictive as gambling. I didn't have many problems quitting, but i've never felt the way i felt about EQ than with any other game... saving screenshots from it, missing people from it, missing being in the game itself, etc.

The only thing that pissed me off about that website are the huge religious undertones, but that's just because i'm not religious. Her son did have psychological problems, and EQ just pushed him over the edge, and if it wasn't EQ then it would have been something else if he didn't get help, i agree with that. I would hope that she realizes that too. But like i said, she doesn't want EQ shut down, just wants SOE to acknowledge their game can be addictive to some people, and offer the help that her son might have needed. Flame on

I am reluctant to feel the huge amounts of venom for her that a lot of people feel, simply because she has lost a child and finds it very hard to deal with it. This is one outlet for her to express her grief, plus, as you say, she's trying to help others who are in danger of the same fate.

Now, the part of her website that I really, really, REALLY hate is that certain people on that site seem hell bent on taking the Legal Route. Her lawsuit against SOE was a joke. There's even talk (earlier in this thread, in fact) of people on that site seeking legislation against these "dangerous" games. Now, that is something I cannot agree with. Until they start putting nicotine in your CDs, I don't think there's any call for it.

It's fine, admirable even, to run a site dedicated to helping people who find they cannot control their gameplay. But to attempt to diminish the importance of personal responsibility with regards to gaming by seeking federal involvement, not only reeks of nanny-state/victim-culture symptoms, but in fact may even be counterproductive. I say this because if there is a legal setup regarding MMOGs and addiction, parents of troubled kids may not even get involved i ntheir offsprings' gameplay, seeking instead just to leave it to the law. And I think we all know how dangerous treating any entertainment outlet as a babysitter is, when the player/viewer in question isn't exactly balanced.

I'm not sure if that's sarcasm or not, but in case it isn't (and to enlighten anyone else not familiar with the tale), I suggest you look into it. This guy had a long, long, long history of mental illness. It's true that EQ (or perhaps more accurately, relationships within the game) really brought things to a head, but it's really not the case that he was ever well-adjusted, at least in the adult years covered by articles on his death.
