Garden variety? Think not. The amabili is one of the FEW species that is pure white. Not to be confused with the amabilis grandiflora.

My Phal. amabilis is not grown in a pot. It's mounted to mesquite as what I think all orchids should be.

Most of the pure white Phal's you see are crosses and not species.

I just came back from the Fascination of Orchid with another 40+ orchids to add to my collection. Up to 250 now.

My guess is that the orchid the photographer used for that picture set was purchased on the cheap for quick set decoration. Such orchids are available at your local supermarket, let alone flower shops or specialty shops. You could be right, but I'd sooner assume the photographer and crew didn't go out of their way to track down rare orchid species, when they had more important things to do. Futhermore, it would be very hard to justify the purchase of a rare orchid to the person in charge of the line budget for that shoot, when your intended audience (horny guys, for example) probably won't notice - and won't care to notice - the difference.

Also, the orchid in the pic doesn't really appear in focus. Are you that much of an expert that you can make a positive species identification based on a blurry image in the background of a photo?

I'm no expert whatsoever. I do have some orchids in my house, but I'll confess my relative ignorance as to their provenance and species. They're from reputable flower companies, and not supermarket-purchased, but they're not from an orchid specialist or anything.

I'll defer to your demonstrated expertise in this matter. But all I'm saying is, I really doubt the flower in that shot is anything to get excited about. :P
