+1 Internets | Screenshots, lend me your eyes and knowledge Recently we are testing out a new camera system AXIS Q1755 1080i Camera. Works great, but my main problem is my lack of video/picture editing skills. Take for instance the photo attached. I want to be able to enhance the photo to show or at least show some semblence of the license plates, also want to be able to see faces of people. I know this CSI shit, but was wondering if I need special software to be able to do this. Sky is the limit for budget, but bang for my buck would be nice if there are multiple options. End result if I could have my way, I want to be able to clearly see license plates and identify faces. Any help would truely be appreciated. I am currently working with the standard MS Pciture viewer, needless to say it doesnt help.

| Get a camera with a zoom feature.

+1 Internets | It does have that, question. If I have a NAS recording video, can I zoom in to any footage at any time. Keep in mind I have zero knowledge of security systems, this is my first foray.

| I may be wrong...but if your video camera is recording at 1280x1023 resolution, than thats what you get zoom in all you want down to 1 pixle but, it will still be 1280x1023 the information it records is what it records. Now higher resolution allows you to zoome more, hence the gigapixle photo etc- I am not informed but I am sure there is some programs out there that can smooth out and help sharpen a zoomed image/video but nothing crazy like CSI on TV where they take some random chicks photo from her cellphone and zoome into the licence plate of a car 2 blocks away. My advice is just get the highest resolution you can so you can zoom in on the source as much as you can before haveing to rely on a program or something to sharpen and enchance the picture- as for zoom, optical is all you should care about- digital zoom is just artifical like stated above- it cant magically make more information (resolution) than it has. But I am sure there are MANY more people WAY more knowledgeable (and can spell) than I am on this subject.

| Basically no. What you see in movies and tv is complete rubbish and magic. The camera records what the camera records. There isn't somehow more information that the you can't see, but magically can be seen when you zoom in. In order to do that, you would need an insanely high resolution camera. Think 100 gigapixel. Or, have the camera itself actually pan and zoom to stimuli. Which is exactly what casinos, banks, and the like do. What you want for security presumably. Is a computer faceli/cense plate software/hardware package that will identify faces, and and tell the camera to focus and zoom in on them. But you can't just take a wide angle photo, and then zoom in afterwords and expect the visual information to be there. There are tricks you can do with contrast, and inverting etc, to retrieve some information. But its hardly effective in real terms. Plates are all the same font, so you can compare the plate alphabet to the blurry images and their profiles. |

+1 Internets | Yea, after zooming in I can definitely see the plates, only problem is now I cant see the lot. I am wondering, because I know about the face software, if I can program it to zoom in on license plates as people drive by?

You are also trying to automate a process that casinos spend untold amounts of money on with staff to watch everything with joysticks. | |

Also, in total agreement with what everyone said. That TV/Movie stuff is bullshit. You would need a camera worth more than you'd ever get out of it for personal or small business use. But I think 100 gigapixel is a little extreme, I know the army is trying to get 2.3 gigapixel for aerial surveillance, and they don't even exist yet. They want proposals to design them. The highest resolution camera I know about is 1.8, and it's being used by Darpa: Darpa develops a 1.8 gigapixel digicam and no, you can't 'check it out' Also, the amount of data this thing is pushing out must be fucking insane.

| Yeah. The sensible option is to just buy like 10 cameras and place them in key locations. It is way cheaper then any automated system. (Yeah 100gigapixel was just made up, of course. but it was to emphasis, even the 1-2 gigapixels that are top top of the line, can't really even do what hes asking) Anyone want to do the math? 200ft area, with each inch being at least 20 pixels. 48,000pixels by 30,000pixels. (lets say its 1.6ratio) hmm. thats 1.5 gigapixel. Last edited by Caliane; 08-28-2009 at 12:52 PM.. |
