I'm guessing certain restaurant chains are insecure about being trumped by Dennys of all places.

There were advertisements for this in IHOPs for a while. This is a charity event rather than a "recession busting" event like the Denny's promotion a few weeks ago.

Either way, I'd stay far away from these places due to the excessively long lines. My time is worth more than waiting 30+ minutes for some free pancakes.

This is probably bullshit, but I believe it might have something (very very indirectly) to do with Lent and Mardi Gras. Something about how originally Fat Tuesday was when you ate all the leavened bread in your house, since you couldn't eat it during Lent.

IHOP did this last year too, at around the same time. They're trying to raise money for some charity, I think it's for a children's hospital. Either way, free pancake day always brings long lines to the ihop near me... it's right across the street from the texas a&m campus. BTW, they had some Shriners out there pulling people, if that helps you solve your mystery

I got a delicious short stack right after work yesterday, no line. The 2.75 they charged me for a glass of milk kinda killed the "deal" aspect but good excuse to give to charity.
