| Most of you guys don't have the education to grapple a complex topic like this without deferring to your prejudices and socially reinforced thought patterns. ![]() I'll help you out. First you will need to figure out why something like a month for black history was created. What was the need they hoped to fill, and who are 'they'? I won't lie, you may have to read books that are nonfiction, and the covers won't have bare chested females sprawled on tigers with dragons overhead. Then you will have to examine the teaching methodologies and frameworks that are used by educator's past and present. This will also involve an in depth investigation into the course materials themselves. Or you can do what you always do and let out a string of gibberish the same way diarrhea explodes out of your ass and convince yourself that, despite all evidence to the contrary, you are using intelligent human thought. I'll connect the dots for you. You will find that black contributions to American history have been historically ignored. Same goes for women, and every other non WASP group. If you are at all interested in an accurate depiction of the past, you would want to resolve this gaping bias. So we have the need settled. Now, we must also remember Political Correctness. This thing called PC has created a backlash against all things minority. This is why you get so much angst in threads like these. PC sucks and is nonsense. Despite this, things like black history month were started for a valid reason. I personally believe black history month and the like are more harmful than good. But I will be the first to give an educated reason on why. I think these minority appreciation months actually marginalize minorities even more. By fact of delegating a single month to a specific group implies that you can ignore them for the rest of the year. It doesn't just imply either, it actually works out that way. This reinforces a biased and one-dimensional viewpoint of American history. It also reflects a disturbing trend in American society (and by default, the world) in that we are trying to standardize, corporatize, and politicize every aspect of American life... and that Americans want everything spoonfed to them in quick superficial little chunks a la wikipedia. So I will tell you what everyone's problem is with anything that involves minorities on these boards. It's not that anyone is racist (though some clearly are), it's that people are pissed off by this politically correct movement that is constantly telling them how to think and behave. Just sayin'. |

![]() This might have been true 30 years ago. Historians have been tackling this issue since before most of us were born. It probably would sound smart in a high school level history class though. | |

| It had a purpose. At this point it's more like a 4 week crash course that most people ignore. According to the USA Today article, here are the origins of Black History Month. The black historian Carter G. Woodson founded Negro History Week in 1926, seeking to build self-worth in an oppressed people, preserve a marginalized subject, and prove to a nation steeped in racism that children of Africa played a crucial role in modern civilization. The organization founded by Woodson then turned their week into a month in 1976. Lets break it out. 1. Build self-worth in an oppressed people - Consider it built. Given the ever increasing number of african americans in business, on television, in sports, and now as the President, I'd say that their oppression has quite nicely ended. Sure, there are sections of the country where they are harassed, but the same is true for we white folk, asians, etc. 2. Preserve a marginalized subject - Consider it preserved and no longer marginalized. 3. Prove that the children of Africa played a crucial role in modern civilization - This is already taught in history class. Look at the history of, well, the world. Done. If those three things were the founding reasons, in the words of Big W, "Mission Accomplished" Not that it matters. Black History Month is never going to end.

+11 Internets | All I'm saying is if we're going to celebrate black history month, have affirmative action, black only scholarships, restrictions on usage of the N word, or any other various forms of reverse racism. Then I should get to own a slave for a decade or two. Seems only fair that we get to enjoy the benefits if we're blamed for it anyways. Otherwise, take it all away shut the fuck up and stop using it as an excuse to perpetuate the black agenda.

I know George Washington Carver invented over 9000 uses for the peanut, but for the most part there has been little done in American history by blacks that didn't gain notoriety simply because it was done by a black and not because it was done first.

| the whole idea of black history is a joke anyway, if the europeans didnt buy the slaves from the black slavetraders 200 years ago in africa they would be there right now chucking spears and putting bones in their noses and plates in their lips right before they eat their next door neighbor. the fact that a black guy invented some silly shit like an ice cream machine or traffic light doesnt change that slavery was the best thing for black history. i guarantee not one black in their 200+ years in this country would trade what hes got here to go back to living in africa. not one. |

| first of all, the holocaust was about genocide and slavery was about slaves, its kinda hard to make someone pick cotton for nothing in 100degree heat if they are DOA. Second, the Jews are still probably outcast in germany even though everyone pretends nobody hated them ever. yeah so stfu |

| well since I am actually black I'll throw in the standard DEEP ROOTS. Don't have much else to add except it'll never happen. Don't know if I have an opinion on the matter or not just that the time it would take for me to do real research on it because its such a complicated topic is kind of irrelevant. It won't happen. so uh... carryon..
