This is because their costs are completely covered by their oil sales. This encourages international corporations to invest heavily in them.

The UAE is one of the most stable and peaceful countries in the world btw. Everyone there is too fucking rich to care about blowing up their biggest customers. You seem to have the delusion that being Muslim country makes you an unstable terrorist nation. This is completely untrue. Extremists are born out of poverty and desperation. They see the American foreign policy that has fucked them for years as the source of their terrible conditions (whether it is true or not).

Believe me, Dubai is not going to be a ghost city in the near future. They might have some trouble once people switch to alternative forms of energy, but that is why they are investing in all this. It is a strategy to survive the eventual drop in oil consumption as the price goes up. They are very very smart people to do this.
What a spin, lol.

Forget about BBC NEWS | UK | Tourists warned of UAE drug laws ? How about BBC NEWS | UK | Woman arrested for 'sex on beach' ? The woman in the latter story was charged with the egregious crime of sex outside marriage.

I have no idea how they expect to maintain these structures once they're built, but without access to the future it's impossible for me to prove any of your outlandish statements regarding the economic viability of all these projects false.

This was a major international story awhile back. 15 year old French boy gets raped by 3 men and is then threated by the UAE government that he would be charged for being a homosexual if he pressed the case.

Wow, just wow. Floored @ both the fact that a guy was sentenced to 4 years for poppy seeds from a roll found on his clothes, and for how bad someone just got served...

It is estimated that Dubai produces 240,000 barrels of oil a day and substantial quantities of gas from offshore fields. The emirate's share in UAE's gas revenues is about 2%. Dubai's oil reserves have diminished significantly and are expected to be exhausted in 20 years.[49] Real Estate and Construction (22.6%), Trade (16%), entrepôt (15%) and financial services (11%) are the largest contributors to Dubai's economy. Dubai's top re-exporting countries include Iran (US$ 790 million), India (US$ 204 million) and Saudi Arabia (US$ 194 million). The emirate's top importing countries are Japan (US$ 1.5 billion), China (US$ 1.4 billion) and the United States (US$ 1.4 billion)
The first growth in Dubai was supported by oil, but it shifted from an oil dependance a while ago. The prime minister, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , has had a clear goal of shifting Dubai's economy to more sustainable industries and away from Oil. (which dubai does not have a lot of)

National Geographic had a really good article on Dubai a few monthes ago. The explanations of their districts for financial companies with very limited oversight, and little taxation was really interesting. They're a good example of a country really running itself as a business first and foremost.

I don't know why you guys are busting on Dubai so hard. At least they are trying. They are better then most other fuckfaced country in the assbackwards middle east.

It's somethin. They might be outrageous, but whatever. They try.

America gets shit for not allowing same-sex marriage, at least in America you don't need to fear being homosexual. Shit like that gets brushed under the table in the rest of the world because LOOK AT THEIR BIG TOWERS. Building cool shit shouldn't cover up the fact that your society is so controlled lol.

Sorry, I meant one of the most progressive countries in the middle east. They still fail in someways, but you can now go to the beach and see women in bikinis. That seems pretty progressive to me.

What outlandish statements? They are building all this shit so they can have a sustainable source of income. The tax is extremely low/non-existant in order to encourage foreigners to unload all their money into the country.

Very good ideas, and it shows it isn't nearly the shit-hole people try to make it out as.

My friend who works security at a mall here in Houston told there was a rich muslim guy driving a lambo around the mall almost purposely trying to run people over. Course when mall security pulled him over and asked him what he was doing he pulled out some bullshit card saying he had diplomatic immunity. Evidentally he worked at the embassy or something. The mall security guards wanted to beat the living shit out of him.

Most guys who have money like that think their better than anyone else in the world. Give them diplomatic immunity is like giving them a card to be an asshole and get away with murder. I wish the whole civilization over there would sink into the sea.

Edit - Bah misspelling ftw

The more fantastic stuff they try to build over there, the more I wonder if God will straight-up drop the hammer on the whole place.

I guess I'm just not seeing what is so sustainable about stuff that only the upper upper elite fraction of the world can even afford. To me sustainable would be something that at least maybe 1% of the world could afford to check out (and would want to).
