I have purchased a new car. Love this thing. My buddy owns a Audi A4 and when I test drove this, I could feel the "Audi" in it. Same dash, same red consol, same shifter...same tight feel..and 40% of the cost.

Hey Eomer, does the 335xi actually have limited slip diffs in the front or at least rear? The 335i doesn't have an LSD which results in hilarious tire smoke in anything but a perfectly straight line. Hopefully they rectified that on the xi..

For that money, why not an M3? Is it just the AWD? The M3's V8 sounds unbelievable over 8000rpm, even if the M3 is a tad slower in a straight line than a nicely-modded 335 like yours (although probably not yours, considering the AWD, except the first 60') the visceral quality of the engine might be a tipping point for me.

335i's have an "electronic differential" now, supposed to mimic a proper LSD (started getting these in late '08, still not as good as a real LSD but the car can be taken to the track and run very efficiently). Also, a properly modded 335i is not "a tad faster" than an M3. A Procede V3 or JB3 335i will absolutely blow the doors off an M3 in a straight line. There are 335i's out there breaking into the 11s on the 1/4 mile with just a chip, downpipes and exhaust. A recently done up Procede 335i with small ASR turbos put out over 500 rwhp (that's WHEEL hp, not crank so even more if you want to talk crank numbers). I don't have pictures of my first 2 cars but the first was a '99 VW GTI and the second was an '01 Accord Coupe. Pictures of my current car (when it was still stock):

Not bad sir, not bad. Are there available torsen or clutch-type differentials? Whats an M3 do with headers, cat-back, cams/heads/whatever? Any available mods for them? I'm extremely lazy about going and doing mod research on BMW's for some reason - the BMW community makes my eyes bleed.

Not sure about Xi models but you can pickup a Quaife LSD for a 335i for about $2k if you're so inclined. M3s can be modded but unless you get really extreme they can't be tuned to the same degree as 335s. There is a G-Power supercharger for the M3 that puts out something like 600hp(don't really remember), but like I said it takes much more extreme measures to really tune M3s. Just upping the boost on a 335 results in big power gains, most of the big power mods for the M3 require adding some kind of forced induction.

The real benefit of purchasing something like an M car isn't only the "improved" motor (subject to debate of course) but it's the suspension tuning, somewhat wider track, etc, that go into making it "The ultimate driving machine."

Oh, and to go along with the thread...

1990 Toyota Celica All-Trac
1992 Toyota Celica All-Trac
1998 Mitsu Eclipse GSX
1987 Audi 5000CS Quattro
1992 Audi S6

I love me some modified German cars. After the untimely death of my 5000, the wife let me buy a new toy. Basics are finished, next starts the process of building a new 20v turbo for it. Man, I love that car, even though it's old.

Can't really answer many questions on modding and tuning, or just general car mechanics, but it seems Obsidian had what you were looking for.

As far as why not an M3, yes, basically it's AWD. The car is my daily driver, year round. I won't buy one without AWD because I live in a climate that has a 6 month winter. It's not required or necessary, but it sure as shit is nice to have. I was thinking of getting a "toy" car next year, but this car is so much fun to drive that I would have a hard time justifying it. And we're rapidly running out of garage space at the office since my dad and bro just can't fucking help themselves. I'll post pics of the entire collection one of these days. But basically between the three it's as follows in a couple weeks:

2007 - Audi RS4
2008 - BMW 335xi
2009 - BMW 335xi
1996 - Porsche Turbo
2008 - Porsche GT2
1999 (I think) - Ferrari F360
2009 - Ferrari F430
2005 - Yamaha R6
2003 (I think) - Ducati 998

Black 2002 Chrysler Sebring Convertible, first car. ..was a piece of shit.

Second and current car is a 2009 scion tC, that will eventually have cat-back exhaust, cold air intake, and new headers.

Evo is A++

S2000's aren't bad, but they are rather ugly.

Picked up the new car today and waved goodbye to my little 50 HP shoebox (which took me everywhere I wanted to go, just took a bit and you couldn't bring many friends and/or luggage).
