Screenshots Ubuntu Thread

There was a slight siderail on the video thread over this video.

As a recent Linux convert I figured there may be some more interest if this had its own thread.

I followed that up with:
Download link Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS (Hardy Heron)

You can also dual boot windows and Ubuntu if you like:
Ubuntu:Hardy -

Instructions for Compiz Fusion which is what is used to do the stuff in the video are found here:
How to install Compiz Fusion in Ubuntu Hardy Heron. « Future isn’t around the corner, it’s here!

I thought maybe we could have a place to discuss for new users and have some of the people who have been using it for longer exchange help.

Personally I could use help because I have been trying to figure out how to run an internet radiostation for a while now and keep having issues. I can also help some people with some other basic stuff with setup and installation.

I have to give props to how Linux is really pushing the boundaries of user interfaces (comparatively to windows/macs). It's great to see whats been possible actually being applied. It's kind of sad that this will probably never catch on mainstream though, one of the big things that your average users want from their computer is a consistent interface. This is probably too much for the average user to handle.

I've used Ubuntu off and on for about a year now. Great to use on a separate partition when Windows fucks up (happens frequently). I'm still a newb with it, but it's incredibly versatile. Whenever my laptop ships in, I'll be using Linux only.

Looks like Linux can finally move into the hands of the non-specialised user, though personally alot of those plugins (motion blur, snow) do nothing for me.

They're like the lens flare filter in photoshop. Something dumb people do to try and look better than they are :P

I've got Ubuntu and most of Compiz running now, rather amusing. For some reason I can't get the cube to work though, will only give me the two workspaces on a double sided plane, no 4 workspaces on the cube for some reason.

Video playback also seems borked, but we'll see if I can find codecs for that.

Edit: Video playback fixed. Still can't figure out if I can add more workspaces. Anyone running more than two workspaces?

What's the use of such an interface? Honest curiosity.

Check under System -> preferences -> Advanced Desktop effects settings

Then under desktop make sure you have Desktop cube selected and rotate cube as well. To rotate you use CTL+ALT+left click

Yea I have cube and rotate cube on, and it rotates fine, but it isn't a cube. It's a double-sided two dimensional flat plane with one workspace on each side.

The majority is eye candy, some of the window switching stuff is nice. The real reason to use compiz-fusion is this:

1. Buy a white 9 inch screen eee pc
2. Install eeebuntu with compiz-f
3. Change the terminal to black backround with hot-green text or use an irc client with the same colors
4. Sit in front of hot girls during lectures
5. Use the terminal or irc from time to time and show off while boring professor talks to himself
6. Integrate into hot girls lives seamlessly

Pro tip: Use gdesklets(widgets/gadgets) for more eye candy such as Starterbar

if you dont have the workspace switcher on one your panels then right click a panel and choose add to panel. then select the workspace switcher. now right click the switcher on your panel and choose preferences. now add as many workspaces as you want. but if you are doing cube then do a max of 6 workspaces but 4 should be all you need. then you can right click the switcher and remove from panel if you want or keep it on there. most likely you only have 2 workspaces made right now.

By far the most impressive thing about the ubuntu package to me is the install process. Or hell the fact you can just run the OS off of basically any media. CD, thumb drive, run it as a temporary OS or start the install process if you want to install it. Chat with friends on gaim and browse the net with firefox while it's formatting and installing. Fucking class.

Is there many games that run on this or isn't not a gaming type OS?

Not really, there are some open and closed source apps that cover running windows games but most are kinda iffy at best.
