+2 Internets | I installed ubuntu today and I can't seem to get my nvidia 8600GT to detect in the hardware drivers page. Any suggestions? Also, note this is my first go around with anything other than a windows platform. |

| My installation of Ubuntu has been fairly painless. There was a hardware conflict issue with my harddrives, but that was my motherboard and not Linux itself. After the initial install, I downloaded a few packages, Wine, and some games, and it's working pretty well. The games require little tweaking for me, so far. Warcraft III runs great, TF2 runs close to as well as on Xp, Dark Crusade and Dark Messiah both work. So for me it's mostly like Windows with a cooler UI. |

| I decided to try XUbuntu (uses XFCE4 instead of Gnome). I have two hard drives -- I unplugged one to make sure the install didn't decide to format it for some reason. Anyway, I plugged it back in and apparently Ubuntu doesn't look for new hardware that's been added? It doesn't see the drive -- I had to manually edit FSTAB which is kind of bizarre considering the kind of user Ubuntu is targeted towards. Also, I installed the non-open source Nvidia driver in the add/remove program...yet it doesn't appear to activate it? If I go to hardware drivers it says no proprietary drivers are installed. I installed KDE4 for shits and giggles -- have heard how unusable it is. Other than the fucking huge font it uses, it's actually pretty cool. When it matures I think it will make a killer desktop environment. Anyway, I'll probably reinstall Gentoo tonight unless someone can shed light on the above problems. |

+12 Internets | Everything in the video looks really cool, but most of it is not very practical, in my opinion. The Zoom/Scale feature is really the only thing I think I would use. It also seems to me, in my limited experience of meeting Linux users in real life, that this 'fancy' stuff is what they hate about mainstream OS's.
