So I went with Yellow Dog and got it installed today. Nice to see things kinda make sense in the grand scheme. Im having trouble installing things though. As i type, im compiling some SDLMame or something along those lines. Its really not a bad as Ithought it would be though. The default environment is Enlightenment which wasnt good for me so I switched to KDE since my local linux guys use that so we can go from the same frame of reference until i get the hang of it. Over all, Im rather pleased with it though. If this mame works, Ill be a happy cat.

Just tried it out. I was reading some installation instructions and was stuck with the partition part of the whole thing and how people had issues with dual booting with vista so someone pointed me to Wubi - Ubuntu Installer for Windows.

Grabbed that file and all I had to do was run it, pick hardive to install to, make username/pw and it downloads the 700mb iso and installs it after rebooting. Was sooooo easy. No partition needed, it just makes a "ubuntu" folder in whichever drive you picked and everything stays in that folder.

It looks really nice so far

Great comment. "You have the fucking game developers to blame for not doing a shit ton of extra work so 0.00001% of the PC using population of meganerds can play their games without booting to Win"

If video games were widely available for Linux or any other OS, there would be much more people using "alternative OSes" as their main operating system. Duh. Not to mention games would run better on them thanks to better ressource allocation and such.

Also you have to do the "shit ton of extra work" just once. Nowadays developers use the same engine for 360, PS3 and PC. They just want to save some time on the PC by using an already existing API - DirectX. They could just write their on API, and even use it for different engines. id Software did it successfully for years, as well as Epic. And those companies are clearly smaller than the big names like EA or Activision, so it's just a matter of will and greed - they want to earn that extra 3% of profits that developing an API would cost them.

This will happen eventually, as Mac OS and Linux OSes take more and more market share from Windows. DirectX is one of the smartest move of Microsoft, in the same logic they ever had : don't worry about the price, what counts is to be there. So they released DirectX for free, it's a great API and Microsoft is very supportive. I can understand why it's tempting to use just DirectX. But you have to consider the ulterior motive: everybody is stuck on Windows and Microsoft can keep their market share.

Catch-22. And Vista uses a Linux-like resource allocation system now, people just bitch about the memory usage because they don't understand it and because it reports usage differently from XP.

Once? I guess if you mean they'd be working on the thing forever, then that counts as once. DirectX is updated almost monthly and graphics hardware has at least two major revisions each year. Keeping up with that would be an insane amount of work--keeping in mind that the company would have no support from ATI or nvidia.

id didn't make an API; they used OpenGL with the full support of the hardware companies, and there's a HUGE difference there from what you're proposing. ATI and nvidia can barely be bothered to maintain OpenGL compatibility today, let alone actually doing major optimizations. Even id will no longer be using OpenGL after the release of "Tech 5" and they are going the DirectX route with Rage, except on the Mac. Neither of those games will support Linux.

You're right about one thing though, MS was smart. They have the gaming market locked down for the foreseeable future.

Had an old laptop sitting around with an infested install of Vista, so I figured I'd give this a try. I like it so far. Thinking about keeping it as a music-server attached to the receiver in my living room. I'd use it for a full fledged HTPC if I could find a way to make it work with my comcast box.

Anyone experienced in setting up mythtv? If I can find a decent external tv tuner that will decode my cable box I might give it a shot.

There was a guy that joined my EVE corp who constantly had problems with Ubuntu. Was it him or the OS? And is there a game friendly linux OS or should gamers just use windows?

I don't see the advantage of bothering with Linux if most of what you do is gaming. Granted, it's fun to mess around with and get stuff working...but you'll eventually get tired of fooling with it and go back to Windows.

Yeah I'd stick with windows for gaming. Everytime I want to run wow or tf2 I gotta reboot into vista ;x But it doesn't hurt to have the option of 2 OS on boot up. The desktop eye candy is nice and it's fun to just mess around with and learn something new whenever I feel like it.

Did you use fat file system or wubi?

Could this be your error?
