Backtrack 3 is also a fun Linux tool, it's for penetration testing and etc.

In case you didn't figure it out already.

In the taskbar you should have little representative boxes that show what is on each desktop. Right click one of them and then click preferences. Then add to the columns (4 for example).

If you don't have the little boxes on your taskbar, then right click the taskbar and click add to panel. Then click Workplace switcher.

For those of you who play WoW you can Load Wine and play from there. Wine is a Windows Emulator.

Ubuntu is nice for people who have never used linux since its out of the box ready for the most part like Windows is but personally I use Gentoo and prefer it over the others.

WoW actually runs really well with WINE (a Windows "emulator" for Linux).

I use Gentoo Linux for my multimedia storage / playback system (got a TV hooked up to it for a second display output.) System has been running for over a year and half and it's just as fast and clean as day 1.

That's what I like about Linux -- inexplicable shit doesn't happen to it out of the blue unlike Windows.

I have been reading into linux alot as of the last few days. Im wanting to install it on my ps3. Ubuntu is one that Im thinking about. The other is yellow dog, but im still up in the air about which one is going on as of yet. The main reason I want it is for emulation functionality and basic web surfing. The only thing Im concerned about is i know jack and squat about linux so it should be an experience.

Installing Ubuntu was far easier than installing windows, for what it's worth.

Got it running pretty well now (my laptop speakers won't produce sound, though my headphones work fine when plugged in; can't figure this one out), cube and all. Very entertaining so far. The window/workspace navigation features are a lot more useful and intuitive than I thought they'd be.

I've got a 9.xx build of Wine going and it runs Foobar perfect so far (won't run the Zune software, odd that!), going to try installing WC3 now and some D2 and see how those go. I heard they have a stable 1.0 release of Wine I should get though. That not being in the package downloader though makes a bit harder on me, since I've yet to actually install of a file/program in Ubuntu outside of the package downloader.

From a terminal, for Wine 1.0 - however don't expect massive changes from the 0.9x series, mainly situational/obscure bug fixes.

Code:
wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list
sudo apt-get update
suod apt-get install wine

That looks like some sort of UI they'd use in a movie or TV show to make someone using a computer more 'exciting.'

For actual functionality, I think I'll stick with fluxbox.

That's what I thought from the video, figured why not, looks amusing at least.

I've wound up really liking it. I find it easier and faster to rotate/change/whatever my workspace than navigate through multiple open windows/apps in windows.

The Wine code worked great, though that was more than a little humbling. Shows how little I actually know about Linux based anything ^^

There a beginners guide to this command-based hoo-haa someplace I can peruse?

Yea I made it that far, I'm not completely useless at this ^^

I want to know/learn how to make the code is my point. I'm willing to bed I won't be able to rely on Ubuntu's package manager forever, and need to start learning to use Linux commands if I'm going to use this OS as anything more than a toy.

Missed a step there buddy
Ok, that's more to do with the fact it's an EEpc rather than the UI mod. But still!

That's by far the nerdiest comment I have ever heard. Dude, you're totally gonna score chicks with a tiny PC running an IRC client.

Wine Is Not an Emulator, God damnit!

But you're right, WoW runs perfectly fine on this non-emulator. There is also a WINE fork that has an active developers team who patch their program to make it compatible with any new released game of some interest. You have to pay $10/month for the updates though, I believe.

Just for the record, you have to thanks game developers for not making their games compatible with Linux. Or, rather, make them compatible only with DirectX because the fuckers are too lazy to code I/O and shit from scratch. And it doesn't look like anybody is going to compete with DirectX any time soon.

Cedega, and the price is 25 dollars for 6 months, after which the app still works but you don't get updates any longer.

Also, is it really a shocker that a company wants to spend less money in the long run on their software? Its not lazyness in the least, its a cost benefit analysis; what will it cost them to make this game playable in linux? Will the increase in revenue justify the money spent in development? The answer to both those questions really is a no brainer: Too much and No.
