Yeah everyone has been against the shelving so far, and I'm starting to agree with them. I pretty much have to rethink my entire design. I want to keep the cup holder but I'm going to lose the trash can, it seemed like a badass idea at first but it'll probably be more of a headache than its worth. I'll rethink it all and draw up another design tonight.

Edit: Or tomorrow.

Honestly a cupholder, while a nice thought is going to be a pain in the ass with a mobile board containing Keyboard / mouse underneath the desk. It also presents an issue with possible technology upgrades later on.

What I suggest is a cuprest with cork bottom. Cut a circular hole about 1/2 an inch deep in your desk surface and buy a 1/4th inch deep cork that way you won't have water / liquid stains on your wood surface.

This is a two fold solution as lots of fast food places offer cups that lack any reasoning as to their base size it also serves as a unconcious memory to you on where to place your cups.

I should echo the remarks from others about the getting rid of the waste basket, I suggest making that space into a storage area for a keg tap. I think the space is roughly the same and you will be 100X more badass because of it, it also fits well into my plans for a cork cuprest.

EDIT: For the keg I'm talking about those mini keg fridges with tap.

I mentioned the recessed cup holder with a cork bottom in an earlier post.

While drinks should be avoided in our tech areas, you know as well as I do that a large portion of us have a drink or drinks on or around our desk at all times. So, he might as well prepare for it and cut & construct a safe cup-holder. You could even take it a step further and make a nice rubber rim for it and make it as stylish and lasting as possible.

The area you were previously designated for the trash can could be used, for example, as a hinged door that houses an additional storage area. Perhaps a compact fridge for your beverages and snacks.

The idea I had of putting your CPU on a plank and then installing wheeled rails is also worth mentioning again. If I was building a tech desk, I wouldn't hesitate to do this, especially considering how often I need access to my CPU .
