You could get the plain lamp that doesn't look like they eye of sauron but that wouldn't be very fun. It's really just a studio lighting lamp that costs $5k. Someone saw it one day (1907ish) and was like FUCK modern lighting... $5k bitches! I still like it but you need a pretty massive room for that lamp given that it's 500w and takes up a ton of space (base is 18ish sq ft). Not like your going to throw one into most people's living space and have it not be incredibly awkward and weird.

If you're looking for a modern lamp on a college-style budget, they actually sell some really cool stuff at Target. I'm not kidding. Target kind of rocks these days.

Meh. You can buy a modernist paper lamp at Target for $50 and buy pretty much the exact same modernist paper lamp at DWR for $500. Just trying to give some suggestions. :P

Appreciated, I actually like target fwiw along w/ BO concept and Ikea. I love ikea for shelving. I got that cube shelf (expedit) thats like 6ft by 6ft there for $200(?) makes a nice room divider and actually holds alot of shit. And if anyone buys that thing don't try to put it together yourself its damn near impossible.

I don't mind Ikea's lighting fixtures and shelving, but their furniture sucks. It falls apart/deteriorates rapidly and looks tacky. But yeah, I do think they're underrated for fixtures.

My biggest problem with Japanese architecture is that it's been copied and exploited to death over here, to the point where I will walk into some (decidedly non-Japanese) person's house and think he's a total sleazeball because of it. It's very...I dunno. Very Mike Ovitz. It's trying too hard.

That's not to say that I don't admire the traditional Japanese aesthetic. It can be stunning. But mainly when it's in authentic, Japanese homes, and not when it's lining the hallways of some douchey hotel or some movie producer's bachelor pad.

An old boss of mine used to have a faux-Japanese bachelor pad with a black Ferrari in the garage that he never actually drove because he couldn't drive stick. He just kept it there for effect. Let me tell you: pretty much nothing screams "My entire life is an endless, agonizing dialogue between myself and the world about my tiny penis" like a faux-Japanese home with an unused Ferrari in the garage.

Strangely I think Ellison's house is the perfect example of that. God I hate that monstrosity.

Edit: The reason I hate that house is because it makes no sense in the setting, but I do like the landscaping. I just want to tell him, "You're a CEO not a samurai." Even worse his yacht is named Ronin.

If I was down with traditional Japanese home decor I wouldn't be shitting my pants because I'd be an anal retentive neat freak. Their decor is septic, cheap and uncomfortable looking.

Oak floors? I have those, except they're not tacky press board. Instead they are made from several hundred year old, 12 foot diameter, primordial trees from vast untamed American forests who were chopped down well before the industrial revolution just for me to walk on.

Paper doors? I prefer nice brick and mortar walls able to support my thick oak doors made from aforementioned super trees so if someone wants to break in they won't be able to punch their way into my living room.

As for Katana's hanging everywhere, that is kind of sweet. Maybe I should watch the 3 am home shopping club knife show tonight and pick some up. I know they will be dull and unbalanced but I'll probably end up using them as much as the "traditional house" ones are so meh.

Those lamps are ugly as shit. They look like lamps you would see on photo shoots. And as for "Mood" buy some craft paper and cut some shapes out and put it in front of an existing lamp.... you saved 200 dollars.

One day I wouldn't mind getting a bean bag chair for gaming. 200-300 dollars is far to much for my blood so maybe I'll make my own if I'm not incredibly lazy lol
