| Here are some pics of my old house, which has since gone through two owners (the latest of whom got screwed by the housing bubble. :P) Style is somewhat similar to Eomer's place, very modernist, but it's a bit lighter in color. |

![]() The new house is much warmer and more Cape Cod-ish. It's a WASP paradise. Kind of a complete 180 from the old house.

+4 Internets | Haha yeah, it was a compliment. I think it's the high ceiling and the lights, the big oven vent, the chairs, etc. One thing I don't understand about this modern style, (I'm not privvy to the lingo, forgive me.) but what's with all this minimalism? It seems like a huge waste of space to me?! It's just like in the mall; the most expensive stores have the LEAST amount of showroom/rack space. Your (old) bathroom for instance, where's all the crap on the counters?! I'm not raggin on it, I mean it looks pretty sweet, but I must have too much shit! |

Considering I almost never get laid, well, it makes me sad :/. Quote:
But it's in Edmonton. I mean, I like the city and am happy here. But it's Edmonton. Up until the past 5 years, the downtown was not a desireable place to leave. Not in a Detroit, you're going to get killed kind of way. Although it is considered one of the most violent in Canada. But in a "where the fuck is everyone?" kind of way. No one lived downtown, there were no restaurants, bars, clubs, cafes or anything of the sort open past 6pm. No shopping, other than the one indoor mall downtown that had very mediocre stores (the downside of having the world's largest mall far outside the core). Directly across the street from my place for 3/4 of a block, was a dirt surface parking lot. The last 1/4 was a run down flophouse that was closed 5 years ago, but still had drug addicts and bums living in it. Behind my building is still a dirt parking lot, and across from that used to be a half demolished parkade structure that was used as again, a dirt lot. Kitty corner from my place, a dirt parking lot. Thankfully the flop house is a now almost complete mixed development with a nice grocery store on the main floor. 1/4 of the block was turned in to a pretty mediocre 25 storey condo building (they did a terrible job on the warehouse style pedestal, which is a requirement in the area), and the last half is currently a 32 and 35 storey condo (tallest residential in the city, lolz) with very nice pedestals that will within a year or two be full of cafes, stores, and restaurants. Behind my building they'll soon break ground on a office tower, and they finished the job on the parkade and built a brand spanking new gym. Kitty corner is still a dirt lot, but it'll be under construction within a year, so long as the current owners realize they're out of their element and sell to someone who knows what they're doing. So yeah, I love my place, and the area is rapidly turning in to a true "urban" downtown. But it's still Edmonton .Quote:
However, my friends have nagged me enough that sooner or later I'll get around to finding some good stuff to put up. If I have to date some annoying artsy chick to get her to do it, then I guess that's what I'll have to do. I'm sure Millie would cluck her tongue disapprovingly at the cheap Christmas lights I strung up in the main room a couple years ago for a party that I'm too lazy to take down again. Another thing to keep in mind is that up close, the place isn't quite as nice as it looks. When this place was developed, the average selling price of a typical condo or house was stupid low, one of the cheapest cities in North America. So naturally the finish of new condos and homes was pretty mediocre. The light fixtures are cheap pieces of shit, the plumbing fixtures a tiny bit better. Cabinets are shit, appliances at best average. They did a good job on the flooring and paint, I guess. I believe my bro paid 220k for it originally. That's less than $150 a square foot for a pretty amazing place. The other annoying thing is it's stupid dusty here. Partly from being downtown, but mostly because of the exposed brick. If you just rub your hand on it, you can literally scrape a fine powder of the bricks. They were going to pressure wash all the brick walls in the building when it was being converted, and it was started in my suite. I can clearly see one area where they started to, and the brick there is probably 1/16" thinner, you can clearly see it. In addition the roof (and well, the whole building) is wood and flexes up and down with wind, and that movement scrapes up against the brickwork, creating even more dust and crud. My drafting table, if I don't clean it daily, damn near ends up looking like a gravel road. Quote:
But yeah, long term plan that I'd love to do, if possible, is to buy the suite next to me, move out for awhile, and combine the two into one suite while changing the layout, redoing all the bathrooms and kitchen etc. I figure that would be a lot less work in the long run than buying a house in the area I grew up in and doing a total reno or possibly just knocking it down and starting new. My brother went through that last year, and even though we have extensive connections in the construction industry it was still a massive pain in the ass for him to do. End result is that his place now makes mine look like shithole. I'll see if I can snag pics of it from him. Last edited by Eomer : 05-04-2008 at 11:14 PM.

+27 Internets | You know, I've decided at this late hour that I am going to use the powers of the webernet to decorate my place. Or at least attempt to. Pretend to play along. So, I'll post pictures of the various areas in my place that are needing of something on the wall, whether it be art or posters or whatever. You can scurry out into the web and find something you think would be cool in that spot. Your reward for finding something cool? I buy it and you can enjoy it vicariously through me. Everyone wins! So let's begin! #1 - this is behind where you sit to watch TV. I know the lamps are cheezy, but they work because of the brick IMO. I should probably throw that blanket out. So yeah, this is a very big spot, I could fit a piece eight feet wide here easily. Or multiple things. #2 - pretty self explanatory, something sports themed would be my preference. Like the new foosball table? Notice the picture hook, last used 3 years ago before my bro moved out. Fairly small space, a couple feet wide. #3 - opposite the last picture, same idea #4 - to the left of the last picture, above my drafting table. Observe the gravel I was talking about. #5 - above my cheap assed bed (I'd like to get something bigger and better, but I don't have room for more than a double). I really need new duvets and bed sheets, come to think of it. I still regret the placement of that volume control, it's 18" too high. Ah well. Fairly big space here for a nice large piece. Also, beds + hardwood = chocking your fucking bed to avoid destroying your wall. #6 - above the two man jacuzzi in the bathroom, two walls that really need something other than white paint. One probably 6-8 feet wide, other is about 3-4. #7 - I don't know what I want to do with this area, this is right at the entrance. It's not very usable space. I'm thinking of buying some large storage units from Ikea, as I have virtually zero storage in my place. Any creative ideas what to do with the space? #8 - This is diagonally across from the last pic, again space for a very large piece or several smaller ones. This is the first wall people would see when walking in to the place. #9 - Halfway up the stairs looking back down, room for a lot of stuff both horizontally and vertically. Come to think of it the wall to the right and above the window would also have room for a very large piece, but it would only really be visible to people either going up and down the stairs or hanging out in the loft. #10 - large blank wall in the loft. Behind me would be the door that leads out to the patio. Again, space is 8-10 feet wide, but only about 6'6" high up here. So yeah Salshun, I'm hijacking your thread. Sorry. Please go nuts and find some neat shit, if it's something that I like and is reasonable, I'll seriously consider purchasing it. Man, this is way easier than going to art shows and pretending to know or care about art. |

| Ok Eomer, you're place is like girls on internet dating sites. It looks beautiful from a few angles, but when you really see it, it looks like garbage. (JUST KIDDING, it's still awesome!) You oughta let Millie go over and fix your place up a bit!

| Ok, the fiancee & I are just closing on our first home as well, so we're pretty excited about the place. It's an older home (almost 40 yrs), but the seller is a senior engineer with a home building company and has renovated the entire place over the past 3 years. All the furniture/decor shown in the pics is the current owner's... I have lots and lots of plans of my own right now... =) I'm pumped about the property too... it's quite large for in the city, almost 20,000 sq ft. The current owner uses it as a construction yard, so we're planning a pile of projects we'll be doing pretty much right away... new deck, fill and grass the yard, fence it in to give our dog a safe play area, build a shed w/ attached wood shelter and a sunken firepit. Closing is June 2nd, can't wait. =) |

| Some sections of Eomer's house look like something out of a serial killer movie.

I'm slowly getting around to actually doing some things with the place, but there's a lot of space to fill.
