+8 Internets | Oh man I'll be the loser of this thread once I move into my 1.5-room apartment next month. I'll still post pics.

I haven't seen the movie but it seems like it would be more accurate to call it Orwellian.

| If everything goes through we'll be moving in to this house at the end of the month. $150,000, 10 year old house, the pool and roof are under a year old. 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2 car garage, 1900 sq. ft. Gotta love Indiana housing market.

| I'd rip out the whole fireplace, pull up all the carpet (and give it to Tuco to put on his walls), put hardwood floors down, and scrap most of that furniture! Then put a Salshun style grill out by the pool!

+4 Internets | Looks nice and all, but personally after two houses I am never again buying anything more than like 5 years old tops. Preferably build the next one, that will be a while though. I wish to hell I was a first time home buyer right now though. Great time to buy if you don't have to sell to do it and have good credit it would seem. |

+4 Internets | Yeah, the whole money pit/dealing with 10 years of someone else's often failed DIY projects, just general maintenance and repairs. Not that you can't find a ten year old house where this will not be an immediate issue, but I want to have new stuff at the beginning of its life cycle next go around. Then again, some people would rather buy an actual OLD house and redo it or buy one that has been redone already, which is different than buying something new that has been lived in for 10 or more years, which is what I was talking about. I guess its nice that house has a new roof and all. Is it coming furnished? I would assume not, so I guess the furniture and all is just the current occupants' anyway. And I went through a bit of an oppressive-future-book phase, acquiring all of those you see, like Fahrenheit, BNW, 1984. I'm also in the midst of a "read all the books I should have read by this point in my life" phase, which started with all those future books, as well as Catch-22. I also want to work my way through this list: Sci-Fi Lists - Top 100 Sci-Fi Books And yeah, I've seen Equilibrium. Great flick.

However, don't assume you're the norm for America - only around 27% of Americans even have a bachelors degree, 10% or less have an advanced degree (law, masters, phd all lumped together). Saving money, even if you don't spend like an idiot or shit out kids (as the common assumption must be - if you're not wealthy, you must be an idiot or babymaking factory) isn't easy on anything less than $35,000 a year as a single person. (Household income in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for Details on exactly how well off you are) You're outgoing yearly expenses total in the $50k range, and you're earning $25k in investment gains - on modest returns of 10-12% for aggressive management and high yield funds, you're looking at a quarter of a million dollars invested, at the minimum. You think you're fucking typical? Reality check time. It must be nice to sit on your throne-on-high and lord over us common folk, but in all reality, people are just more poor than they used to be. So all of this talk of how much shit you have; that's fine if that's how you measure your life and your self-worth, but don't degrade what others obviously work hard for, even if it's nowhere near what you can crap out in half-a-days work.
