As for the process, for this particular house it wasn't that bad, but this is coming after spending weeks looking at forclosures. It's owned by Indy Mac, so they wanted me to jump through their hoops, get a pre-approval through their bank even though I've secured my own financing, basically I had to provide documentation for underwriting twice for one loan, and provide Indy Mac with a bunch of information which is irrelevant, and put down a 2% good faith deposit. Also, almost every forclosure I looked at was just trashed. I don't really recommend it, luckily I had a patient realtor who knew where to look. | |

+29 Internets | Yeah I haven't even started planning on landscaping and stuff like that, I am just buying the basics, like a mower, trimmer, edger, shovel, rake, etc. I was really surprised at how expensive it is. |

+286 Internets | Our backyard has a ton of potential, but right now it looks like Mars. The sprinkler system is already up and running in the front yard, so now I have to purchase pvc pipes, sprinkler heads, etc for the backyard. Have to measure out the diameter of each sprinkler head spray zone to make the most use of the space. However, before that, I need to draw it all out and dig all those fucking ditches. I really wouldn't care all that much if the ground was a little soft. Right now its like taking a pick-axe to a diamond. Watering dirt ftw. Our backyard is roughly 100ft by 70ft and pretty much flat. To put in a sprinkler system, sod, some trees and bushes we were looking at, stone/brick walkways, a spa, a bbq "island", fire pit, and lighting will cost us around $10,000 to $13,000. I'm trying to do what I can myself with advice and help from friends who have installed their own various items. Lots of days I want to say fuck it and hire people to do it, but I'm saving quite a bit of money doing it myself. Only thing I won't do myself is lay the gas pipe for the bbq island or lay and set the stone walkways. Uneven paths and deadly explosions I can do without. Since we won't be in this house >10 years, we decided against a swimming pool. Sure, it would add some value to the home, but we honestly wouldn't use it all that much and our good friends 5 houses down have a ~$50,000 pool. We made the deal that they get the pool (they have kids, we don't) and we'll get the spa and home gym. Working out pretty good so far. Wow, first-morning-cup-of-coffee-post. jkafkdjdkl

| It's not cool to be a douchebag about other people's finances. People come from very different circumstances and backgrounds, and while you may not consider $40,000 in savings to be a lot of money, others have worked very hard to save that much up. I'll be the first to admit that I like to spend money and collect expensive things. I'm very materialistic. But I never kid myself into thinking that my money or my things are reflections of my worth as a human being. They're just toys that I'm able to get because I was born into fortunate circumstances. They're not my accomplishments, and they are no substitute for accomplishments. |

| You know, I've seen some people write this before, as if it's some bad thing. It just wreaks of ignorance and jealousy. Do you think US schools have magical textbooks that no one else has access to? My USMLE Step 1 score is one standard deviation above the US national average. In clinical rotations we rotate along with US med school students. lol.

| I don't care what you do with your trust fund or how wisely you invest it (and your implication that I don't invest my money wisely is neither appreciated nor correct, FYI). I'm just saying that it's kind of a douchebaggy move to criticize or make fun of others who weren't born into trust funds and are struggling to save up some money. Obviously I have no idea how you were raised, but I'm sure your parents raised you to show some respect for those less fortunate than yourself. If they didn't, well, they should have. :\ |
