It does all depend in the type of house / building he lives in, but a shotgun is much less likely to go through a door or wall and hit a dog/little old lady/small child.

| I want a glock 17. I don't know why but it yells "hey i'm so sexy" to me everytime I look at it. I think that plus my browning over/under shotgun should be good right?

The 21 and 21SF are both .45 ACP. The SF designates short frame. It's not in the catalog or on the glock site. But Glock makes several models in the SF variety. Such as the 21 and the 30. I carry a 30SF. It's slightly thinner than the regular 30 and a slightly smaller grip. Same for every SF model. SF models also have the amidexterity mag release. Visually there's not much difference and they have the same capacity as the parent model. If your going to carry a glock of any variety and they make it in an SF variety - get the SF version.

| Your instinct to go with a handgun is right. It takes no skill or grace to take a long gun away from someone inside. They are slow to raise, hard to get around corners, hard to take cover or concealment, and the attacker has a shitload of leverage on the gun if he gets ahold of it. There's no way to deftly peek out of my bedroom with a long gun. That's a deal breaker. Get the Glock. If it's your first gun, stick with 9mm, simply because it's more affordable to shoot. Everything you learn with a 9mm applies to larger caliber guns. Shot recovery takes a little longer with larger caliber or smaller/lighter guns, and it shouldn't affect your times too much unless you're competing or have bad form. If you have man hands (L or larger gloves), get the 17, if smaller, go with the 19. Some people with ultraman hands get a little slide bite when they grip a Glock very high, but most people can learn to not grip that high. Similar platforms to consider are the SW M&P (avoid the Sigma like a dickplague), and the XD. I place the XD last in the bunch, but it still might work best for you. If you get a Glock, make sure you don't keep those shitty factory plastic sights. Also buy a nice ($50-75) LED flashlight such as a Surefire G2 LED, or toss a cheap weapon light (Insight and Glock make affordable ones). Both wouldn't hurt. You might find yourself taking the flashlight everywhere you go with you at night, so I'd get that first. |

I know its the internet and you are Rambo, but it sounds like instead of securing your family and covering the point of entry to DEFEND yourself, you are advocating LOOKING for trouble...

| Looking for trouble inside my house if I hear a window break or someone taking a crowbar to the backdoor? Wouldn't you? I'd bet my life on it. I got into competitive shooting after moving in next to a cop. Believe it or not, running around all over a shooting range with a gun and shooting stuff makes for good times. You're basically getting the fun part of being in the Army or whatever without any of the shit (afterall, cardboard doesn't shoot back). A positive side-effect to the hobby is the skills you pickup apply to defending yourself and family pretty good. Well, at least better than what you learn from golf or kayaking. It's a hobby like any other hobby. Sometimes doubefags misinterpret knowing something about your hobby as playing Rambostrike. It's a whole lot of fun, but it's not for everyone. Anyway, the important thing is to have a gun. Handguns are easier to use indoors, which is pretty important if you want to defend your home. Last edited by LikeWow!; 12-25-2008 at 10:39 PM.. |

| To each their own, I wouldn't go out looking for trouble, things in your home are replaceable... the life of your loved ones and yourself is not. It also depends on where you live as well... California has much different gun laws then Texas... as for me, I got old reliable (Remington 870) fully loaded with empty chamber within easy reach of my bedroom. Strange noise at night, grab gun, take position with lights off crouched behind the half wall at the top of the stairs. I've had three incidents during the past 2 years, one was a drunk guy who thought it was his apartment... other 2, racked the slide when they came into view at the bottom of the stairs, nothing but intruders running out. I consider myself lucky, again, my mentality is to avoid trouble but protect myself and loved ones. If you have the proper training (tactical courses, enough rounds through the barrel) more power to you. I agree whole heartedly, the important thing is to have a gun. Everyones home layouts are different, shotguns have their place in home defense as do handguns. Wish I lived in a castle doctrine state instead of a haha burglars rights state, thanks california...
