+3 Internets | Woman Finds Beetle Larvae in Cigarettes Anyone else find irony in her comments lol A Big Chimney woman found a nasty surprise in her cigarettes. Lashanwa Keeling found Cigarette Beetle larvae in six of the ten packs of her USA Gold Lights. "When the bug fell out I was like, no this ain't good," says Keeling. "They're in the filters, in the tobacco, it's disgusting." The gross factor isn't the only thing on Keeling's mind. She doesn't know how many of the bugs she has smoked, and if smoking them is dangerous. ![]()

| When I first started reading that I thought that when they said "a Big Chimney woman" they meant that Big Chimney was her brand, and by god that is the best name for a cigarette brand I think I've ever heard of. Sorta sounds like a brand made by Native Americans. |

| But I heard the beetles can't pierce your skin with their fangs.

| My cousin owns a cigar store in Boston. He told me all about these back when I used to smoke cigarettes (I haven't smoked in 10 years and counting!). Apparently these beetles' eggs are found in 99% of all tobacco products out there. The eggs can lay dormant for years, and can survive extremes in both heat and cold. Typically they will hatch if humidity exceeds 75% and temperature exceeds 75-80 degrees. They're more commonly hatched in cigars because the conditions inside a less-than-perfectly-calibrated humidor are perfect for hatching larvae. Also, viable beetle eggs tend to be found in higher-quality tobacco like fine cigars, as opposed to low-grade tobacco like cigarettes. It's uncommon to find live larvae or beetles in cigarettes, but it's not unheard of. Most people smoke beetle eggs on a regular basis and don't even know about it. |
