+18 Internets | The Global Warming Swindle Recently the BBC (correction Channel 4 in th UK aired it) aired a piece meant to highlight the failings of the theory of global warming. And here it is: A lot of people that are skeptical of global warming have very understandable concerns about what is actually happening. They have a gut reaction like, "I don't think humans can change the earth's atmosphere significantly," or, "the Earth's climate has always been variable how do we know that it's man made now?" So, people go on the internet and they look for a validation of their intuition. They actively search for information that supports their claim while ignoring the evidence that doesn't. The trapping is that, like in all cases of confirmation bias, they are prone to give undue weight to people who express opinions that are factually or conceptually wrong. So, if anyone's interested in why the ideas presented in this video are wrong or right then ask away, and I'll do my best to answer. Last edited by Tea on tuesday : 03-20-2007 at 05:04 PM. |

Try not to resort to ad hominem attacks. It makes you sound ignorant and lends no credence to your ideas. It's also a key component of a pseudoskeptical position. Last edited by Tea on tuesday : 03-20-2007 at 02:13 PM.

+31 Internets | I don't have time to watch the video. Is this the BBC actually airing Global Warming is fake, or is it some clever ploy to draw people in who think it's fake and then tell them, omgosh, it's real? Summary either way, please.

| I live in an area which generally receives around 200" of snowfall each year. This winter we had none at all before xmas, and less than a foot had fallen before the first big storm finally hit in late January. This is a continuation of a trend that's been going on for the past few years, and seems to be getting worse each winter. The number of 90+ degree days each summer is steadily rising too. When I was a kid, there would only be a handful each year, but now it's up there throughout July and August. I think anyone who doubt the existence of global warming has their head buried in the sand (or perhaps somewhere else), but I'll agree that the root cause of it is debatable. Even if you believe that people aren't the cause of what's happening, I think you have to agree that we sure as shit aren't helping matters any. Regarding that BBC piece, I find it odd how different their attitude towards global warming is. They talk about it being a politically correct that thing no one dares try to challenge--a sharp contrast to how things are here in the US where the government actively works to suppress research that claims what we as people do is responsible for the climate changes. |

| i think its an awful idea to shit where we live (earth), but i think the warming is natural along a slope on some graph some where. the vast majority of earths energy comes from the sun. variation of quantity of sunspots over time has to be the sole factor that determines our temperature, not how much our cows fart. I do praise human efficiency and hope that one day we can stop burning dead animals for power. |

There have been numerous recent studies that all point to yes solar forcing is real and no it can't account for any more than a little bit than the current warming trend. Currently solar output has a total average contribution to radiative forcings of 0.12 W/m^2---a number that climate scientists have consistently downgraded over time.

| I find it ironic that the last 3 big global Warming conferences that Al Gore has tried to host have been cancelled due to a blizzard... When Mt Pinatuba(sp?) in the Philipines blew up back in the late 80's it released more greenhouse gasses in that one blast than all the man made gasses of the previous 100 years... I bet the cavemen were complaining about Global Warming back in the day...when the glaciers were receding from the plains of North America ~H |

+29 Internets | According to this chart, we release about 7 billion tons of carbon every year: (US GOV website) ![]() yeah, why would anyone think such an insignificant amount could possibly change the climate? |

| Great piece. I really like how they compare Global Warming to religion. You can't question it or apply science to it or you are called a heretic. Heaven forbid we go through the scientific method and double check our findings, or update them after more observations. Change our hypothesis?! BLASPHEMY! |
