Quote:
"Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." He went on to say that violent conversion to Islam was contrary to reason and thus "contrary to God’s nature."
He quoted that from 14th-century Byzantine emperor, Manuel II Paleologus.

Couldn't have gotten much more inflammatory short of peeing on the Koran. After all the work up over some random nobody drawing comics of Muhammad you need to wonder what the response is to the leader of the Christian faith saying that Muhammad only brought evil, conterproductive aspects to previously standing religious doctrine.

What the hell was he thinking? I hope it comes off better in the proper context...

Yeah like the catholisism or however the hell its spelled was much better in its past, dont get me wrong i agree with him about what he said but people that live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones. Only real difference is back when the catholic religion was doing its bad shit was a time and age that most of us consider to be a barbaric and un-civilized time, where as the whole jihad shit with bombing and terror is happening in modern times.

Seriously though, this world from day one would have been a better place without organized religion. I dont mean religion i mean organized religion, religion in and of itself is fine. I agree that while the bible has more fiction then most Ann Rice novels, it does have some nice moral guidelines to live your life by and thats what it should be used for. God should never be used as an excuse to kill people, take thier land, censor what people can see or hear, control peoples way of thinking, basically what organized religion has been all about since its conception.

like kill all the first born of an entire population because their leader doesnt want to kiss you ass?

or ask to a father to kill his son to prove his loyalty? it doesnt matter if at the end you stop him, you brainwashed a father so much he wanted to kill his own kid

fuck that shit

the really pathetic thing is the muslim god, the jewish god and the christian god...

are all the same god.

the jews came "first"
then the christians came "second"
the muslims "third"

all 3 have the old testament
all 3 have the 10 commandments

jewish bible do not have the new testament of the christian bible
neither does muslim koran

neither the jew nor christian bibles have the muslim muhammad additions
to the koran

Eastern cultures during the dark ages must have considered Europe to be quite barbaric as well. After all that's when the science was done there and Europe was held back by a church blocking any kind of progress that could threaten their power. Let's remember that the church went after Galileo less than 400 years ago and still interfers with science today. (stemcell research, for example)

I suppose it wasn't a bad move for the catholic church - lots of people in Europe get the feeling that their country is being overrun by 'outsiders', many of which are from islamic countries. If they can create a sense of "us vs them" it may just help their declining membership. Nevermind the vaste amount of problems it creates, those are for someone else to solve.

First, he didn't say those things about Mohammed or Islam, he used someone else's quote.

However, what in the fuck did the Vatican expect to happen when you use a quote that basically says Mohammed did nothing good?

lol fuck that. Context is everything. The big difference is your last sentence. That MATTERS. Yeah christianity did some brutal shit but it 'grew up'. Islam, and so what if 99% are peaceful...that still leaves thousands and thousands willing to kill indiscriminantly, hasnt.

The guy he quoted, his shit is relevant today. His quote is accurate today. How sad.

Annihilate them all. Then go on with our merry lives of watching television, 40 hour workdays, and suing each other over divorces/copyright infringement. This is "the modern times", not the Dark Ages. They need to get with it.

Overreaction. He was quoting someone else. Anyone that gets this worked up over someone quoting someone else needs to be wiped off the face of the earth.

Too many people are wrapping Catholicism up with things it shouldn't be. He quoted a Byzantine emperor - those guys were greek orthodox. Say what you want about the evils and backwards nature of the catholic church (I'll probably agree) but the empire was the height of civilization and cultural achievement, and always held a very strong pacifist position among general society.

When you play video games and the cleric has to use a blunt weapon, it's because of the byzantine church. Members of the clergy who shed blood were barred from ever administering holy sacraments. General members of the populace, including military members and leaders, who shed blood, could not take communion for a year. Even emperors could be barred from the church for sanctioning particularly brutal campaigns.

Compared to the Byzantines, yes, the Islamic world was violent and offered nothing new. Also, when at that time most of the middle east was Christian yet ruled by Muslim leaders, it gave a very different perspective on the whole situation. The middle east had been the source and strongest center of christianity for a long time, and in Manuel's day had just seen centuries of violence Catholic vs Muslim.

I may not like pope palpatine, but I stand by his quote 100%

So if someone quotes Hitler, they don't really support his views - they're just quoting someone else in front of a worldwide audience!

If you quote someone you either do it because you share the view, or because you're about to debate it. He didn't debate it, it was his statement.
