Witnesses also said the gunmen tried to throw hand grenades into the embassy compound, shouting “Allah Akbar!” or “God is great!” It was not clear if any of the grenades made it over the walls, which are about 8 feet high.
Eight whole feet! I dunno why but the image of a bunch of dudes shouting God is Great, then failing to throw a grenade over an 8 foot wall, then getting owned is something I wanna see screenshots of.

Primary mission for a Marine Security Guard is to ensure the safety of the Personnel and the Integrity of the Embassy - not to chase down a couple of n00bs who can't even lob a grenade over an '8 wall. Plus it wouldn't exactly be legal afaik - since the US Embassy is US Territory, and Syria isn't :P.

More than that - they want to have some opportunity for advancement and a sense of personal pride. Without those two critical desires, no one would ever support power-mongers.
