Basically, it goes like this. Light travels at exactly 299,792,458 metres per second. From your wikipedia article, this is a definition. Since the length of a metre is definied by light, it's a bit circular, but it's a frame of reference. So, we're dealing with a measurement that is in (length)/(time), ie metres/second or miles/year. Now, if you want to convert the speed of light over a length of time into a distance... [(speed of light) * (length of time light travelled)] * (Length units)/(Time units) The time units cancel out, leaving only distance. If I missed something in the wikipedia article, please point it out. Otherwise, please show me a legitmate usage of "light-year" as a time measurement... I'd be insterested to hear about this new usage. ![]()

A light year is a measurement of distance, it's as simple as that. | |

+7 Internets | A light year in terms of "age" is like saying an 70 year old is 840.5~ 70mph car months. Or 840 lightmonths. Or 7 lightdecades. etc. The speed is there to trick you into thinking "my, thats a big number next to a year!"

| Britney Spears is 24 light years old. She, like jesus lady is an extradimensional being and the light year reference refers to spatial movement along that extra vector. True Story. ...on a side note. As I was looking up Britney Spears age Bush came on speaking to a crowd. He said "I understand a large portion of America does not trust my cabinet". At that point the entire crowd interrupted and burst into applause for about a minute. Quote:
