Same kind of situation we got in my town here about bus drivers.. they're always on strike because too many of them get assaulted / beat up and they think people are too violent.. the problem is people are assaulting them because they are too fucking unreliable and unstrusworthy because they're always on strike randomly.. Jack Thompson is convinced that video gamers want to kill him because video games make us violent.. while we simply want to kill him because he's a fucking asshat.

That's really nothing like it...

one is entertainment for millions, where just based on the popularity of games like GTA it's a certainty some who play those games will get (or most likely already are) violent. Think about it - GTA doesn't appeal to someone going to church every sunday as much as the kid walking around "gangsta style." From there it's no big stretch to see that some will end up in court for a violent crime.

People beating up bus drivers for being on strike (or any reason, really) are just trash and deserve every day in jail with bubba.

As for the kid who got in trouble for threatening Thompson: Serves him right. You have to be pretty stupid to threaten anyone over the phone - especially a lawyer.

Agreed, it is just a shame how vulnerable video games are to these media attacks, blaming for every case of violence. I remember couple years later back, one lawyer was quoted saying all he had to do was convince the jury his client committed the crime because of playing a specific game to obtain a lesser charge. I think the case involved manslaughter. Anyways...

Actually, they tried the same thing during the prosecution of Devin Moore (which lead to Strickland vs. Sony and JT's dismissal) using GTA3 as an excuse and the Judge didn't allow it.

It depends on if the judge on the case is an absolute dipshit.

Well, fine - but who knows if there is a connection between supporting/engaging in that sort of play and tacitly approving it. If there is, that's a bad thing and Jack Thompson's crusade is at least redeemable. Who knows if that one kid who was really into skinning the injuns probably ends up 30 years later telling jew jokes from the urinal next to you.

I was one of the kids that thought it was a pretty fucked up game, just like how vast majority of the "bad guys" on GI Joe were non-american.

If anything videogames STOP violence. The average(notice:average) kid who plays videogames 2 or 3 hours a day most likely is not going to go on a shootout at a police station because he shot a cop in GTA with an AK-47. Plus, these kids are probably getting a lot fatter and losing muscle mass...so why would they bother trying to be violent when all they want to do is beat the final arbitor mission on halo 2..
